Oh, I got my flashlights AND my books taken away and hidden at night all the time. My parents knew exactly what I was doing and they would come upstairs and try to catch me. I would always sneak downstairs when they were asleep and find another flashlight and try to find the book. I went through so many flashlights and batteries when I was little.
Now I just turn on the light if I want to read, because they might tell me to go to sleep, but they know it's really just a lost cause.
Same here CS. It's hopeless. I rarely ever go to sleep before 2 now.
My parents would always yell at me and tell me I was going to ruin my eyes by reading with minimal lighting. I felt like telling them: "Newsflash - considering that you both need glasses and Mom can barely see without hers, I'm probably not going to have good eyesight anyway, so I might as well do what I want."
Luckily, I stopped getting in trouble for staying up late to read when my brother started messing with the sleep timer on his TV so it would stay on until 1:30 AM.
Once my parents started having to kick me off the computer at 1:30 I think they realized that reading in bed might not have been the worst thing in the world. I think I"m naturally nocturnal. I could stay up all night every night if I wanted but no matter what time I go to bed I'm tired in the morning.
I used to read in the car at night too by the lights of the streetlights passing by.
My parents told me that I would ruin my eyes also. And I did. I don't know if it was because of the reading at night, but now I'm so nearsighted in my left eye that everything further than about 6 inches away is blurry, and my right eye seems to be getting worse also.
JL, same here. I've always said that I can stay up until 6am, but I could never wake up at that time.
My parents always get on my case about being on the computer so late when I'm home, but considering my dad stays on the computer until 3am some days, they can't really get on my case too much.
Both my parents are librarians, so they can't really get on my case for reading
And both of them are in glasses and I have 20/20 vision, so I definitely didn't ruin my eyes.
When I was little, instead of my punishment being the TV or computer gets taken away, it was always that they would take away my books. Our computer when I was little was this old Mac from the eighties or early nineties that you had to restart twice to get it to come up in color. We got our new computer in 97 I think. It's actually in my room now still working, we put new Windows software on it and I fixhed it up.
I miss the TV shows that came on when I was a little kid. Nickelodeon and Disney were actually good back then. Now it makes me cringe when kids say how shows like Lizzie Mcguire or Butt Ugly Martians [yes that is actually a show on Nickelodeon] are the best shows ever.
I can't read in the car, it makes me nauseous.
My eyes are bad, but so are my mom's.
katt, WORD on the old-school Nickelodeon love. Clarissa Explains It All, Doug, the early Rugrats stuff, the game shows (Double Dare, Wild & Crazy Kids, and a bunch of others I'm forgetting the names of), all of that stuff kicks Spongebob's square yellow ass.
Occasionally it makes me sick to read in the car, but very rarely.
I kind of want to have laser surgery on my eyes, but you aren't allowed to do it until you are 18, and they reccomend being at least twenty one. I really want my eyesight to be better, but at the same time the thought of having laser surgery makes me nervous.
A lot of my students watch Full House and Fresh Prince on Nick at Night because there aren't a lot of little kid friendly shows on at 8pm anymore, I guess. I also hear about Jake and Josh (or is it Drake and Josh?) and That's so Raven and Lizzie and of course SpongeBob.
It is a little funny to think that Cosby was an 8pm Thursday show for so long, and then it morphed to Friends, Joey, and Will & Grace.
As for middle of the night activities ... I wound up being a librarian with a technology degree, so I guess I put all those hours of wasted sleep to good use. :) And both of my parents have glasses so they can't use that excuse either. :)
I love my contacts, I don't think I could do laser surgery, it kinda freaks me out.
I don't get Nickelodeon. I used to watch Today's Special, Mr. Dressup, Under the Umbrella Tree, and Polka-Dot Door.
Full House and Blossom were shows that I watched when I was a bit older.
I wish Nick at Night would still play shows like Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley, and Bewitched and all of those shows. Now Happy Days comes on at about 3:00 in the morning on TV Land and I always forget and miss it.
They are now coming out with the old Nick shows on DVD. I haven't bought any of them yet, but I did buy Salute your Shorts off of Ebay last year. Shh don't tell.
My mom wanted to have laser surgery, but our eye doctor told her that she's so nearsighted that she would still need glasses even after the surgery.
I used to love watching Nick at Nite when I was younger. It was a good mix of the truly classic shows (I Love Lucy, Mary Tyler Moore) and more recent ones (The Facts Of Life, Wonder Years).
I love the Wonder Years. I wish they would play that more often on TV also. I don't think it's playing at all right now actually.
Billy Joel??? That is so awesome! My high school graduation speaker was um the principal the valedictorian and saluditorian and two girls in the class. At the senior awards we got to pick who would be our speaker (it is always a teacher) and we picked the chem and physics teacher that was really hard but REALLY funny...
But Billy Joel...WOW
Salute Your Shorts - I loved that show!
Today's special - al a kazam a kazoo! (Or however you spell it!)
They need to have a "defunct TV shows" channel on cable for all those kind of great shows. Even "You can't do that on Television." We used to get free weekends of Disney Channel sometimes when it was still an extra pay channel. I watched Mickey Mouse Club and Kids Incorporated when that happened.
As for the laser surgery - I really wanted to do it and even saved enough for it to happen when it started getting a little cheaper. But my friend had it done and it made her 20/20. Since I've had glasses for so long I can't handle being "just" 20/20. My eyes are corrected better than that with my glasses...I'm now worried that if I did it and was technically 20/20 I'd still feel like I needed to see better. A couple years ago I got a prescription for 20/20 level glasses and I couldn't drive at night cause I felt blind. It disappoints me.
awe, i'm sorry.. i feel like im going to need glasses soon. I'm going to bring some with me to RENT just incase.
I just had the longest day/night ever. I'm sick, . Which really sucks, I'm desperately trying to get better because I need to study for my midterms and my birthdays in 3 days *does a dance for seeing Will Chase on her bday*
"Something always gets me about seeing the stage -- just the bare stage." --i know exactly what you mean. I can't put it into better words then you, but it's something about knowing that it's been like that for the past 10 years.. probably one of the only things that hasn't 'changed' about the show.
caitiesus, I'm in college, in case I didn't make that clear, so it makes a little more sense than Billy Joel coming to a high school graduation. He donated a huge amount of money to our music school this year and is having a concert here in March, so it just made sense for the university to ask.
I hit the genetics jackpot when it came to eyesight. My mom and dad have both worn glasses since they were little, but my siblings and I all have great vision. I guess it skipped a generation.
If I had a dollar for everyone who suggested a channel for old kid's shows I'd be rich.
If they did do one, I would tell them to put on:
Wild and Crazy Kids
Legends of the Hidden Temple
Roundhouse
You Can't Do That On Television
The OLD All That
Double Dare
Are You Afraid of the Dark
Kid's Incorporated
Ducktales
Chip and Dale
The Nickelodeon Doug [not the Disney Channel Version]
The Early Years of Rugrats
Clarissa Explains It All
Nick Arcade
Pete and Pete
Hey Dude
The Secret World of Alex Mack
Dinosaurs
And so many others. Did anyone watch TGIF when they were younger? I waited all week for Friday Nights so that I could watch Hanging With Mr. Cooper, Step By Step, Family Matters, and of course Boy Meets World
i used to LOVE boy meets world, i was obsessed.
.. uh kinda random, my friend wants to know what are good ways to get rid of a hickey?-- does anyone here know?
I have heard that green tinted makeup helps cause it's the opposite color of the bruise. Dunno if it works though.
Option #2 - a turtleneck. :)
Boy Meets World used to be so good. It went kind of insane with it's few years...like jumping them to college when I think they were supposed to be Juniors, and having Eric get dumber with every episode [like Joey on Friends].
yeah.. the earlier episodes were the best
..she only has one turtleneck
