We're talking about the Ebay RENT clothing now?
Score for our preemptive conversation.
Thanks, Emcee.
Of course the most surprising part of that Sirius show was when Anthony started talking about the fanfics about him and Adam. I certainly didn't expect that to come up.
We're psychic, you know, Lari.
Like MAGIC.
So many people seem to think the cliff is some sort of CGI - it's like reverse psychology. They're so used to seeing all kinds of miraculous computer created things that they can't imagine that something is real. Otherwise known as actual reality.
Adam really DOES look superimposed on that cliff, though.
I think I'd kind of prefer to pretend that the Cliff isn't real.
I absolutely cracked up when I saw the movie yesterday. I was so gone.
He doesn't look superimposed to me. I keep hearing about how the cliff is a lot like a couple of music videos. Since I haven't seen them, I didn't have nearly as strong a response to that sequence. It wasn't the greatest idea, but not a dealbreaker for me.
Surprisingly, no one at the theatre I was at laughed at the Cliff. They did laugh at Mimi coming back to life, the meanies...and during the funeral!
What big eyes that furry fellow has!
Well, the Mimi thing, maybe, but you can't laugh during the funeral, that's just awful. But then again, my audience was pretty awful in general, so I guess I should have expected it.
No one laughed at my local screening either. It was a crowd similar to a lot I've seen described - mainly kids and twenty-somethings, very noisy before the movie. They chattered right through a making-of King Kong thing. As soon as the movie started, though, they shushed each other and got very quiet. When the RENT logo came up, someone sort of squealed and then everyone laughed, but it was friendly, sympathetic sounding laughter.

There was one girl behind me today who was crying SO loudly. I wanted to hug her. And in the dark between Without You and the funeral, I heard her go, "It's so SAAAAD!" and her friend was like, "Shhh, it's okay." So then when Adam showed up on The Cliff (are we capitalizing it now?), it was so sad! You know how someone tries to make you laugh when you're really upset? It was just like that. She was hiccuping all over the place. I almost turned around to scare the bejeesus out of her, but I didn't.
Awww, poor girl! There were a couple like that at the first showing I went to, which was mostly comprised of RENTheads. The second time I went, it was mostly folks looking for a movie to watch after Thanksgiving dinner. A family of 20 came in and took up the entire last row and then some.
It's nice to have you here again. I was so lucky to see the movie for the first time at Symphony Space with a crowd who loved and responded to everything so much. I was thinking that the audience response seems more important for Rent than for most movies - or is that just me?
Chloe - For RENTfans... audience response is important. For everyone outside of that 'umbrella,' it's just another movie, sadly.
I think we just care about it a lot. I was thinking today about it, because yesterday was the first time I saw it with a "normal" movie-going audience. And to us, it's our baby. To lots of people, though, it's just another movie. The response, I think, is more overwhelming than it is for most movies, though.
Well, what I was trying to say is that how the audience responded affected me a lot. Usually I hardly pay any attention.
