Okay, first - random Adam comment of the day! I had a dream about Adam last night.
Now, down to bussiness... I've never seen the Tarzan movie either. Maybe I should.
Insomniak, I know what you mean. Really, I do. Maybe I'm just crazy, but Aida was way more than a mass-produced show. It was more than "nice." Maybe you needed to have seen it to understand. It was based on one of the most famous operas around - that's reverence, I'd say. I've seen Adam speak about the nature of the reviews of Aida - that comes mostly from the theatre industry being a really nasty business.
i agree Emcee AIDA was so much more than "nice" i believe calling it that is doing it a grave injustice. Especially so soon after it closed.
Emcee, we will have to watch Tarzan one day. We can have a movie night! Tarzan, School of Rock, SLC Punk!, and Temptation!! haha.

Why should I speak differently because it's closed? It didn't blow me out of the water, that's all. It wasn't bad, I like it, but it won't go down in history as a masterpiece. I just kind of hope Adam goes out of the box a bit. Who knows? It's at least a year before Tarzan happens, a lot can change in that time. (And there is my personal opinion. I can't stand the Tarzan songs, even Adam wouldn't be enough to make me pay a hundered bucks to see it.)
He's clearly headed in that direction, though. It's obvious that he wants to get "outside the box." I guess we'll just have to wait and see....
Happy topics, shall we? It's still hurting me to have to refer to Aida in the past tense now.
"Why should I speak differently because it's closed? It didn't blow me out of the water, that's all. It wasn't bad, I like it, but it won't go down in history as a masterpiece."
Have YOU seen it? Not seeing it, i dont really think you can say if it blew you out of the water or not. How can you comment on something you havent seen? And esp., knowing that those of us who have seen it, we are very upset right now that it closed. So calling it nothing special not even two weeks after it closed, is more than insensitive, it is rude. Being on this thread, you know how much myself and other are upset that it is gone.
Tarzan might end up being another TLK or BatB, but AIDA was the exception to Disney's shows. It had substance on top of elaborate sets. Who is to say it wasnt a masterpiece? The critics? No. The audience? Maybe, for their own personal opinion. But you werent an audience member were you?
Much as I hate to say this, TGITF is right. I don't want to be too hard on you, insomniak, because I know it's not easy for you to get out and see shows. But, I guess we just need to ask you to understand that (aside from matters of opinion) it's still a touchy subject for a lot of us. I'm still really sensitive to talk of the show, and I find myself being really defensive - a lot.
To be completely honest, I remember when the first rumblings of this new show, Aida came around. My mom kept hearing about it, but didn't really want to go. Why? Because it was Disney, and because she figured "well, Aida's an opera. How good can this be?" That's what happened all too often I think. People judged it without seeing it... not exactly a fair thing to do.

*long, heavy sigh* (it's really something you have to hear, I've perfected it to an art form)
No, I never saw Aida. No, I can't fairly judge it. But the music didn't knock me over, and that to me is the most important part of any musical. The script may have been great performed, but it didn't say anything important to me when I read it online. The set and costumes were fantastic, no doubt about that, but that doesn't make a show for me. Aida was fun, not the next Romeo and Juliet.
"So calling it nothing special not even two weeks after it closed, is more than insensitive, it is rude."
Yes. Two weeks. It has been gone and I feel I've given appropriate mourning time for it. Why should I censor myself because it's not on broadway anymore? You've all seen it many times, and theatre never lasts. Aida had a good run and lots of fun, all good things come to an end.
Be as hard as you like, Emcee, it takes quite a bit to get to me. If I won't tiptoe in my posts you shouldn't have to in yours.

You're right, Insomniak, you can not fairly judge. But a musical can't be measured by its Cast Recording. I have the Ave Q CD and i like it, but i wasnt blown away. But i have not seen it live yet, so i will not comment on its quality.
Seeing AIDA live is truely special. It is so powerful to see these songs performed, with emotions and seeing their faces, relating it to the character.
No AIDA is not the next Romeo and Juliet, but HOW long ago was written? How many shows, plays, musicals have been written, just because it doesnt compare to something written centuries ago it isnt great? Yes Aida is a fun show, but it is also emotional. It isnt all glitter and eye candy. there is really only a couple parts that you can apply to that. EAL is done ona bare stage. The only one that truely conforms to the "disney-esq" quality is My Strongest Suit. But that just has Elton John written allover it.
Yes it has been closed for 2 weeks. But it is very inconsiderate that when you know that others aren't "mourning" to just go .. well i got over it. We dont all move at the same pace.

I wasn't blown away by Q either, I just thought it was fun.
I can tell by reading the libretto and hearing the OBCR that the show wasn't written on the same level as some others, but hearing you all rave about it makes me think it must've had something, which seems to be a great cast. Wicked is the same way, not the best-written show, but the actors can carry it off because they're that good.
I never said modern literature wasn't great, but I don't think Aida compares to some other things out there. (FYI- I despise My Strongest Suit, since you metioned it.)
I didn't say you were all 'over' Aida, I'm just saying it's been two weeks and it's not really gone. There's plenty of regional productions and the OBCR, book and your stories to keep it alive- My spirit is always burning...
I'm gonna back down (call if tiptoeing if you want).... simply because (stupid as it is, I know) I'm not really in the mind frame to argue this yet. I've barely touched the CD since 9/5 - I'm trying not to think about it. Call me crazy; I know it's ridiculous.
Anyway, I back down saying this: you're entitled to your opinion - Everyone on this board knows that's how I feel. As for the music not doing it for you, fine. To each his own - I think it's a monster score, some people don't. Fine. Maybe you just have to be a fan of Elton's work... I don't know.
I also still believe it's really difficult to judge a show without having seen it. I could give scores of personal examples, but none of that matters; what matters is that it's not really fair to make judgements without having all of the information, and it's not right to have strong opinions that lack proper backing. The show's appeal, as I saw it, was about the production as whole - everything I described to a fault on that last day: the lights, the orchestrations, the score, the ACTORS, the sets, the (heart-wrenching) story, etc, etc. More than anything, a show is about the EXPERIENCE as a whole. And THAT is why it's so far-fetched to judge without seeing.
*sigh* I'm done. Is it really worth arguing the merits of something that doesn't exist anymore? I miss it so much... you all understand.
Just my two cents on this--I don't want to get into a fight.
insomniak, I never thought Aida was anything special either until I saw it. I almost didn't even want to go at the time I got my tickets (this was before I knew I'd be seeing Adam) and I only agreed to so I could do two shows instead of just one. Anyway, it completely blew me away and I ended up sobbing the entire second act even though I knew the entire script beforehand.
I know it's a matter of opinion, but it really is a show you have to see live.
I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just attempting to provide an explanation as to why there are people who disagree...

I never said it was bad you disagreed. I just said it wasn't my favorite and that it didn't change the world or anything. That's fine, not every show can do that. My original point was that I would like to see Adam in a show that will do that, because it seems to me that in Cabaret he showed he's a better actor than what it seemed and it would be nice to see him create a challenging role than Radames.
Emcee- It will always exist. The things we love never truely leave us.
NTG- I appreciate it, I understand why people love Aida. Maybe it's just not my cup of tea, but I just don't think it's the next Le Miz.
Undiscovered- I hear your point. I won't beat a dead horse.
Anyway, this is my position. In light of the closing and the fact that you're all rather angry with me, I will leave you in peace.
There's a huge difference between a show like Aida and a show like Les Mis. They're just completely different types of theater. Not every show can change the world, but almost every show does have the ability to change some lives.
Radames isn't a very well-developed role, but it was Adam's baby. He did A LOT as far as making the role better than what it had originally been. No, it's no Emcee and he is capable of more complex roles, but he did a beautiful job with it and the music was perfect for his voice, if nothing else.
I feel like we're going 'round in circles, though.
It's hard to understand, since you didn't see it. Maybe you'd have felt differently, maybe not. I guess it doesn't matter.
YAY! Okay, so this is a really weird one. I already told Undiscovered about it.
I finally realized the wonder that is Julia Murney, thanks to the Wild Party CD. Last night, Undiscovered and I were talking about Julia, Chess, etc. Of course the image that popped into my head was that Chess press photo of the leads (Adam, Sutton, Josh, Julia, etc) where Adam's in that black tank top (a la my favorite picture with him) and Julia's got her arm around him REAL close. So I think to myself "hey, that must be nice" and make my merry way to sleep.
So, in my dream, I meet Adam at some stage door, but I guess I actually "knew" him, because he gave me a big hug when he saw me. He's very cuddly.... or at least "Dream Adam" is very cuddly. I was with some friends from school... I guess there were like six or so of us. We were taking a really big group photo, Adam in the middle. I was next to Adam - he was on my left. He had his arm around me, and mine was around him. We were all waiting for the picture to be taken, and he reached down behind me and grabbed my right hand, sort of interlocking fingers. *stomach flutters* "Dream Adam" has huge hands, by the way!
Anyway, right at that moment, all of my friends just disappear... that's right - into thin air. So I really don't remember too much of what happened next. I *think* Adam kissed me or something, but then I randomly ended up swimming in an ocean. I suppose that's cool, you know, since Adam likes Aquaman and such, but it's so random. Then, I woke up.
The end. Weird, huh?
