-MY REVIEW-
Wednesday, November 9, Matinee show
DRS Acting Workshop/DRS
Okay, well, first off, we didn’t leave till 9:30, so I was NOT concentrating AT ALL during history. I missed the ENTIRE lecture, because I was thinking too much about DRS, haha!
So, anyways, we get to NY and stop at a dance studio, which was where the workshop was being held. We walk in, and this lady (from Broadway Classroom) greets us. She tells us to get in a circle, and she asks us who in the group sings, dances, plays an instrument, does sports, ect. She spent a few minutes getting to know us, and then after that we did some activities to understand the components of a scene, and what makes a scene work. In the end, we did one final, big, improv scene. It was a lot of fun. Except, there was a tap class going on in the room next to us, and it got a little loud at times. But, other than that little thing, it was perfect.
THEN, she makes us sit down, and says, “I would like you all to meet a special person.” And in walks…ROXANE BARLOW! Let me tell you all-she looks DIFFERENT without the wig. She’s GORGEOUS, and soooo talented. She told us her story, and WOW. Her equity card was basically HANDED TO HER when she was ONLY SEVENTEEN-That’s only a year older than me! (which was when she got into her first bdway show!) She was also cast in CATS as a teenager! And, she’s just amazing. She’s accomplished SO MUCH that many, MANY other performers spend YEARS AND YEARS working on. She was in Chicag, which happens to be her favorite show that she’s done so far. She also talked about the business and stuff. Then, we had a question and answer session. I raised my hand, and said, “I’ve seen you on the webcam before.” Haha, NOBODY else in the room knew what the heck I was talking about! Lol. But, she laughed, and said how every Wednesday and Saturday, the cast is told, “webcam! Go to the webcam!” and usually, the guests who appear on the cam depends on what side of the stage the actors are on at the moment. That’s why you usually see the same people, and not others. She also talked about her weekly routine-which involves TONS of lessons. She takes lots of dance lessons (well, duh) voice lessons, and acting lessons. And Mondays she tries to do nothing b/c it’s a black day. We asked her if it ever gets boring, doing the same show every day. And she said, “Honestly, yes. Sometimes it’s hard to go on that stage day after day and put on a smile. And it gets boring sometimes. But, we remind ourselves that we’re on BROADWAY.” She said that they recently celebrated their 300th show, and before that, they had around 100 (is that right?) performances in San Diego. It must be hard. But, she’s amazing at what she does.
Let’s see what else…oh. There was this kid sitting next to me (he’s a sophomore in my theater class) and he asked the RUDEST questions. But Roxane handled them VERY well, which made me love her even more. He said, “I read somewhere that 50% of the male population in Broadway are gay.” It was SHOCKED. But, Roxanne turned the situation funny, by saying how that she’s married to an actor, and he’s straight. LOL. He also asked, “Does your job cut into your social life?” She kinda looked puzzled for a second there, but she said how most of her friends are in the business. My friend also asked her “What show do you really, really wanna do that you haven’t done already?” She actually thought it was a hard question, and she thought about it for a while. Turns out that she just wants to do Chicago again, because she just loves it so much. (Especially the Cell Block Tango, where she got to do the murders) She was in the movie too-don’t know if you guys knew that!
Anyways, after she left, we went to eat lunch. Then, we went to the theater. My review basically is, that it was PERFECT. Especially NORBERT. I mean, my goodness! The last time I saw him was September 1, and I did not think that it was possible at all, but he was SO MUCH BETER today. He improved…so much. So, it was like a perfect person becoming…more perfect. Haha. Great Big Stuff was AMAZING. JUST AMAZING. The energy was pretty low until Norbert took initiative and gave his ALL in that song. It was the best GBS performance I’ve ever seen. John’s voice seemed to be going away a bit in “Give them what they want,” but it was somehow fixed by the next song, and there were no problems from then on.
What else can I say, but everything was PERFECT. As I said before, it was, somehow, better than the last times that I’ve seen it. Nothing went wrong-every actor did absolutely amazing, which I didn’t expect, because it was a rainy day, and a Wednesday matinee.
By the way, our group was seated in the absolutely last row of the rear mezzanine. I was surprisingly satisfied with them! Just goes to prove that there aren’t really ANY bad seats in the theater at all. It’s just that with me, there was a big guy sitting in front of me. So, for most of the time, I was either leaning off the edge of my seat into the aisle, or I was literally, sitting on the chair when it was folded. It looked like I was standing, but, oh well. And the cool thing about last row is that I COULD stand and nobody would care. I also had lots of room to move around.
But you know what pissed me off? Entrances. For Greg’s, I clapped, but, of course, nobody else did. But, that’s okay, because his entrance is really, really sudden. Then, Muriel’s comes up. I start clapping, but, nobody else does…until about 15 seconds later. You all know how she enters. She was standing there for a few seconds in dead silence, b/c nobody had known what had happened.
But what REALLY, REALLY pissed me off was Norbert’s. Cuz, I started clapping when he entered. Again, nobody followed. But, that was understandable because I was in the very last row of the theater. But, what really got me mad was that nobody clapped after that. Norbert Leo Butz didn’t get an entrance applause! At least last time I saw it, when I tried to start it, people eventually did clap for him. This time, nobody did. And he deserves MUCH MORE than that.
And for Dirty Rotten Number, I stood up. But, nobody else did, which was weird, considering that they usually get a standing ovation. But, it was still so good. I love those two.
But, I DID start the screaming for “we still deserve a hand” line in Dirty Rotten Number! Haha, that was cool.
And Andrew was wonderful, as always.
Let’s see what else. Oh, I spent $65 dollars buying just DRS merch today! I’m SO BAD. SIXTY FIVE DOLLARS. Hahaha. When I walked up to the table, I was wearing my “hummer in my hummer” and “I’m w/ruprecht” button on my shirt, and the merch. dude was like, “did you get those before? Or did someone give them to you?” and I said, “I bought them before.” And he’s like, “oh, then I must’ve sold it to you!” and I said, “yah! Actually…I REMEMBER YOU!” I really did, lol! Then I bought tons of stuff from him.
But, the BEST PART? Well, yesterday, I told Greg that we’d be sitting in the rear mezz, so he probably wouldn’t be able to see us. So, he told me that he’d give me a thumbs up in our direction during curtain call! And…HE DID! TWICE! I was SCREAMING MY HEAD OFF. I was SO INCREDIBLY HAPPY. He totally made my week. Seriously. I love Gregory Jbara. I couldn’t believe that he actually did it! And I had told my friends about it before, so when he did it, we were all screaming. Haha. He better have heard us. Even if we were in the back row! And-I was JUMPING around in the aisle looking like a dork with my thumbs up! He first did it right after he bowed and was running off to the side. And then, after that, Norbert made his announcement about Broadway Cares, and then after he was done, when the cast was walking off the stage, Greg did it again…with both thumbs! He is so awesome.
Today was an amazing day. Simply amazing.
Gads - You people sound serious! Do you have ANY idea of how old I am? Do you know that I've been limping along with this bandaged leg like an old pirate? Those pics of mine are deceptive - I no longer provide financial support to L'oreal. My hair is gray - almost WHITE and my wrinkles have their own wrinkles! I'M NOT CHASING JOHN OR GREG OR ANDREW OR ANYBODY ELSE!!!

Please Mamie, I have a vivid fantasy.
Jamie: you forgot to mention that Andrew buttocks jiggled when Norbert grabbed them.
NO, annie! haha-i was talking about the scene where norbert shows his butt in chimp in a suit. that's what i meant. not andrew. lol
I don't know if Greg ever looks at the thread anymore - but if he does, I HOPE TO SEE YOU SATURDAY, GREG!

yeah, I was thinking about the same.
Hmm I wonder if I can swing a trip to see DRS before Sherie and Norbie are gone? : Probably not, but as long as I can see Greg I'll be oh-so-happy (I'm quite sad I won't get to see John).
WoW Jamie. Sounds like you had an amazing time. It's very disappointing aboit the entrance applause though. With Greg and 'Jo' it's understandable given their entrance situations, but Norbert not getting one. Thats just wrong.
LOL, yeah, sarah!!!!
