Oh, gosh Elphie. I don't know what to tell you. I took a three year course in high school; it was a science research course, where you worked with a mentor. And literally, in order to find a mentor we'd start googling around for articles and journal things published recently in the field, and then start looking into the research habits and interests of the authors. If we found someone we liked, we'd look into their affiliation and how to contact them -- and eventually someone would say "yeah, come work with me!" It was really tedious and really time consuming... the whole process. It doesn't sound like you have time for that. :-/
Nia, you have a PM. I have no idea if it *worked* or not, but please go read it, as it does appear that it's being blatantly ignored.
*nod*
Regularly scheduled happiness.
I was kind of hoping someone would magically pull a mentor out of their pocket. *sigh* Wishful thinking.
I'll probably go in and talk to my teacher tomorrow. My parents are no help! I asked them for advice, but their ideas were so...dumb. And boring.

Wait, you have to actually find someone outside of your school? What about UNC? Would any of the professors there be of any use?
Em, I'm curious. Why did you take that science course? I thought you were more of a humanities kind of girl.
aww! A pocket-mentor. In all seriousness, what other fields would you consider to have major interest in, that would be feasible? The fastest way to approach it is probably to look in your immediate connections, once you know what you're looking for.
I took it because there's a small field of science that I have a huge interest in. That's what I wanted to study when I came to college -- idealistically. I wanted to do it, but I didn't want to spend my life in math/science courses. I've always been *better* at the humanities stuff, but I had a strong vested interest (I guess I still do) in things about intelligence and emotion in non-human animals. I spent three years doing hard-core research on dolphin congnitive abilities, and I loved it. But, ultimately, it'll have to remain an interest, and not an academic or career venture, though.
Seriously, can you not see my message, or are you just deleting it?
The mentor can be anyone, as long as they are knowledgeable in the field.
I was also contemplating doing something about teaching, considering I teach 3rd grade and all, but I wanted something a little more...out of the ordinary. I mean, it would be no problem to find a mentor at my synagogue, but...*sigh*
They just have to be knowledgeable, or they have to be actively doing labwork?
You can do psych studies with educational stuff and teaching. That might be interesting.

Hm. If you love it so much, aren't you willing to work harder to learn about it?
I wonder how much that course helped you get into college. We don't have anything like that at my school.
*points to previous message* Find a professor.
Because I have very little desire to spend the rest of my academic career in math and science classes. It's something I like to read up on on my own, but not what I want to pursue in school, and ultimately "real life." Academically, I much prefer liberal arts, etc. I could sit in history classes all day.
I like to think that it helped a lot, being a "unique" thing I did. But we didn't have IB, so maybe it was a good replacement.
Elphie, a lot of college professors keep their contact info online for the taking, and probably wouldn't mind being contacted. And, even if they themselves can't help you, they may be able to point you to someone who can. It's worth a shot!
*GASP!* I LOVE dolphins! That sounds like amazing research, because that comletely fascinates me! If I could be any animal, I would be a dolphin.
No, no lab work is necessary. Psych studies would be interesting, but Broadway is more interesting.
Me too.
For my history class, I had to read some of Ben Franklin's jounral from some journey he went on. He kept talking about dolphins that kept thei boat company, and then killing them! I was so upset.

Oh, I wish I could take pysch... damn my stupid IB schedule.
It's not really as good as they make it out to be, aside from the art. I have a feeling it has a lot of potential as a program, but my school has really F*CKed it up.
I wonder if I'll end up like that. Studying something else.
I doubt it's so much that the program is great as that it LOOKS good to put on your applications.
Most people change their minds at least once during college. Expect it, I guess.

*chews nails* But I wanna be a writer.
Allie, what have you done?
I'll praise IB to high heavens if it'll pay off.
You can't always get what you want.
But maybe if you act like a brat, you can.
And if you are that serious about wanting to do something, and really know it, then maybe you won't be one of the flip-floppers. It happens.
IB WILL raise your chances of acceptance.
Allie, you transferred schools completely, no?

God knows that brats get into better schools.
Allie, how's your new school?
Broadway Legend Joined: 11/2/04
Yeah, I sure did. Well, the school I went to last year was a little piece of this one, but it's still considered a transfer. I went from a long-time dream of journalism to... I have no idea. English/theatre/psych...
So do people who do their work. And take chances without complaining.
Allie, did you get my Facebook friend request?!

Maybe you could go for something generic and then become specific in grad school? Would you like to go to grad school in the states? Tiff's talked about wanting to relocate here.
I do my work, all seven and a half hours of it.
Everybody pays their dues. It's unfair, but you're not the only person in the world with unfair circumstances.
Canadian schools are so much CHEAPER. I have friends from NY who go to McGill, in Toronto. SO CHEAP!

Yup, I did, Emcee. You're my first friend on there!
Nia, I'm really enjoying it. There are actually DIFFERENT people in each one of my classes! It's cool.
OH MY GOD, did I tell you guys that my roommate moved out??
Did you upload a picture?! YAY FACEBOOK!
Is your new school bigger, Allie? And yes! Are you getting a new one?
By the way, Miss Nia, when you're done with your million hours of homework, do beware of falling stones, now that you're surrounded by so many walls. Makeup can't cover the wounds they'll cause when they hit, which the pretty little walls make it impossible to prevent. Maybe you should paint some flowers on the walls, though. It would be a nice touch.
