That's why I said it.

Posted: 12/13/04 at 8:11amThe makers of Spongebob Squarepants are being sued for sexual references haha, I think that was already mentioned in the off-topic thread though.

Posted: 12/13/04 at 2:24pmI think Spongebob is delightful and one of the most clever and original children's cartoons in years. Why does he live in a pineapple? Because it is a cartoon and cartoons are based on absurdity. Goofy and Pluto are both dogs yet one can talk and act like a human and the other can't talk and only acts like a pet dog. Because it is a cartoon, we don't question it, so why question Spongebob. It's like questioning why Scooby Doo can speak, but only with a speech impairment, yet Scrappy could enunciate perfectly. Or why Melody, the stupidest Pussycat, could understand and interpret an alien life life that only spoke one word - BLEEP! It's silly nonsense designed to be fun, not especially intelligent.

Since when do cartoons make sense? Yes, Spongebob lives in a pineapple under the sea. And the title character of Catdog was a...cat...dog...thing. And the Powerpuff Girls got their powers from "Chemical X" and fight a megalomaniac ape named Mojo Jojo. So what?
I can see why people would find Spongebob irritating- that laugh and the show's complete guilelessness especially- but the fact that "it doesn't make sense" is a pretty stupid reason to reject it.
Oh, and color me idiotic, because I happen to like the show.

I could never understand why that show was so popular. I think I watched it a couple of times before because I was board, and each time it was equally stupid.
More Broadway, less Spongebob.
P.S. This is probably old news, but wasn't there some kid who drowned trying to search for Spongebob?

Ick. I can't stand Spongebob. I think the show is completely pointless and not even funny. I would kill for all of the older Nickelodeon shows to come back (Space Cases, Rocco's Modern Life, Are You Araid of the Dark, Salute Your Shorts, etc.)...
mille- I heard that, too. It's kind of sad what kids will do to search for Spongebob.

Yes, let's take out all our bile on a harmless kids' cartoon.

You haters have probably watched the newer episodes. They really suck compared to the ones they put out in the first, second, and third season.
My favorite character is Squidward...the wannabe cultured elitist. He thinks he's so much better and smarter than anyone around him and tries so hard to be artsy, but when it comes down to it, he's just a cashier. Reminds me of real life.
I also like Pearl, Mrs. Puff, and Mr. Krabs.
Seriously though, the new episodes that they put out after the show had such a boom in popularity aren't why there are teen-adult aged fans in the first place.

Posted: 12/13/04 at 10:55pmReminds me of how Rugrats became total crap after the first movie came out (and maybe a little before that). A real shame- that was my favorite cartoon, and then it became all about new characters and toilet humor. Ugh.

This article is from 1992, so it is somewhat outdated, but the spongey gist of it is still there: SpogeBob is a gay icon of fabulousness.
Bed, Bath and Beyond just had a close-out on talking Spongebob Cookie Jars - ten bucks! "OOOooO It's OH-so-good!"

I know Plum. It was so horrible after the first movie. I mean I like Kimmie and all, but I wish they never had to make her in the first place.
I tried watching that stupid spin-off, All Grown Up, and I end up watching it despite the fact that it's awful. I guess nostalgic sentimentality is stronger than I thought.
