The horrified reactions of, oh about 1/4 of the posters on many TV show geeky forums to the gay kiss is hilarious to read. (Especially comments like, and I quote "You ask any girl about watching a girl on girl scene and they would be fine with it, but even ask a straight girl about a guy on guy scene and they'd be disgusted." Honestly, not most women I know...) Thankfull AVClub where i tend to hang out is, as usual, a bit more level-headed.
I am getting into this show. I caught up last night and as far as the last scene, I took it as simply Ethan being irresistibly drawn to Dorian. It was clearly further evidence of Doran's power. Otherwise, why is he a character.
I am loving the cast. Billie Piper is mesmerizing. The scenes where she describes her leaving home, and then watching the play were terrific. I wish her accent was slightly less thick as I have trouble understanding on first listen...but her face tells you everything. Green, Treadaway and Carney are great, and loved seeing Alun Armstrong!
So, who's going to be the creature's bride? Brona after she succumbs? The lead actress of the Grand Gruignol after an accident in the theater?
Dalton is still sexy at 70!
Just caught up with the last episode--which I thought worked as a perfect self contained episode giving us Vanessa's backstory, while adding to the entire show (it seems to bother some viewers but I like how each episode tends to take a different tone or approach.) Just a perfect episode, even if most of the reveals (ie she sleeps with the fiance) are of course obvious, I liked how they were slightly subverted, And ma, this show is gorgeously filmed.
However, I'm starting to wonder if they'll have any sort of tieing things up for season one (3 episodes left) since it was finished before a second season was even really in the cards.
I assume they really did brain surgeries like that back then, but I was so disturbed by that scene! I also think I'll appreciate this episode more when/if we get a follow up to the last scene in the previous episode. That was really all I wanted to see so I was a little irritated by this episode but at least we knew it was coming.
I loved the episode, and I really hope this show is remembered come awards time. Eva Green in particular. I love the revealing of each character's story, even if this one took a whole episode, it explained a lot. I was always wondering why she lived with Dalton. I cant wait to see Sembene's back story.
Dalton is still as sexy as he ever was.
Cats--yeah, I assumed they'd give her a partial lobotomy (similar to how Tennessee Williams' sister, Rose, had one basically to quiet her up about her claims of sexual molestation) but not sure if they gave them back then. They did do Trepanning, which is what it was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trepanning But definitely gristly to watch. I sorta felt that, given how this show is, we would get an episode that didn't address any of the new stuff from the present, so came in with that expectation.
Dalton has to be the only 70 year old man I'd want to have sex with :P
Doodle, I agree about awards--unfortunately the Emmys tend to ignore any genre show (Game of Thrones became such a pop culture phenomenon so is the exception...)
The Emmy should go to Emma Green's pupils. They are always HUGE.
Reeve Carney sure looks good naked, doesn't he?
Yes. At least from behind.
I didn't think they'd directly address the Ethan/Dorian thing, though he did seem guilty returning to his dying girlfriend... It seems like they're going into plot overload now, which I know some fans have wanted, but I guess with two episodes left for the season they have a lot of ground to cover.
Can someone explain to me where Ethan learned how to perform an exorcism and why he didn't try it earlier? What did I miss?
I don't think you missed anything. There is a mystery there. Not just the exorcism but Vanessa's quick clean up before Malcolm discovers her peacefully asleep.
Like much in this extraordinary show, which requires patience and, as it keeps reminding us, "trust," these and many other questions will eventually be addressed.
Isn't not knowing and enjoying slowly getting to a clearer place part of the fun and if anything even a bigger part of the fascination? Just like life.
I love it for exactly that reason (I'm glad you're a fan, Henrik!) For whatever reason it seems to also be the reason a lot of people, judging by various TV blogs, don't like it.
There's only ONE more episode?! Not at all cool.
Yeah, due to the big budget (especially by Showtime standards) it was given a pretty short order (though I guess not too uncommon--Looking from HBO was seen as a risk and only got 8 30 minute episodes this season.) John Logan has said that a lot of the story does wrap up, since initially he didn't know there would be a second series (of ten episodes.) Which is fine--I'm a fan who hasn't minded at all the deliberate pacing of the series the way some have--but it does make me wonder how much story is suddenly gonna be crammed into the last hour--the preview looks insane.
Cats--at least we now know an answer to your question about who was the bottom with Ethan and Dorian :P
Yes! And it was a surprise too.
I love that they shared that detail! So unexpected.
Ha, I admit I didn't think the show would "go there."
I was a little let down by the finale--simply for the fact that it seems like we've seen this Mina scene over, and over... (If the show wasn't getting a second season--and from what I've read the finale was filmed before they knew if they would get one--I would be much more let down.)
Found it to be a really lackluster and predictable season finale. I was surprised it wasn't better.
It was terrible, but hopefully season 2 will have more surprises. I almost would have preferred that the season end with episode 7 and Vanessa's line "I know where Mina is."
Yep. Sucked.
I'm glad others agree--for a show that I've found consistently incredible, I was a bit shocked it was so lame. I do still have big hopes for season 2.

I'll watch as long as she doesn't flash her tatas again.
Hrmm will she bring out her Mrs Lovett cockney? :P
I wonder who she is playing--still, I do look forward to season 2 and am glad it's 10 episodes. I know the show's pacing seems to have made it an acquired taste, but I hope it gains audience momentum next year (a DVD release probably will at least slightly help.)
