I just got back from this movie and let me tell you that it is a must see. I had bought tickets for the IMAX 3-D showing but after noticing that the show started too late, I exchanged my ticket for a regular showing. I hear the IMAX version is amazing so Ill hopefully see it there before it leaves the theaters.
Anyway, this was a phenomenal movie. It was an animated film that dared to be different and quirky and dark yet magical. It was by no means similar to movies like The Incredibles or Shrek or Shark Tale (no stupid jokes/bathroom jokes *wow i sound like i'm 180 LOL* and absolutley no *WAY OVERDONE*pop culture references). Tom Hanks plays 5 characters (The Boy, Santa, The Conductor, The Dad, and The 'Ghost'). He was great and I think the Academy overlooks voice over performances because techincally its still acting (ie: I thought Ellen Degeneres shouldve gotten an Oscar nod for Finding Nemo). Tom definitley deserves one...I mean he's an amazing actor and he shows in this film how fun, spontaneous, serious, moving, thrilling and ultimatley versitile he can be. Robert Zemeckis (who directed Cast Away and Forest Gump with Hanks) does a great directoral job here and the animation is unlike anything youve will ever see. Although it has it's flaws (ie: its a little too short and the endings SOOOOOOOO good, you still want more), Please see The Polar Express...its one of the best family films of the year.
FINAL VERDICT: 3 stars

I saw the IMAX 3D version today. It is amazing.
The elves made me laugh big time. It's like the munchkins and the oompa-loompas got together, had an orgie, and the elves in this film are their spawn.
There were some parts that were obviously made for the 3D version.
By the way, the 180 minute length is probably due to the fact that IMAX reels are 90 minutes.
