The Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter#0

Posted: 12/12/05 at 6:03pmI fully agree with MEF. The concept of the novel is interesting, however Hawthorne makes the same points over and over throughout the work. It's like getting hit on the head with a Bible for its duration.

There is a musical by Mark Governor -- never saw it, but I LOVE the CD. It's available on amazon:

There's another one available somewhere that I picked up along the way that I don't like at all. The one listed above, though it takes a couple of listens to get used to, has some REALLY great songs in it.

I couldn't stand Pearl. What an annoying kid. I had to read that book three times. Once in High School, then again in college for some Lit class, and then again in college for an American Lit class. I was thoroughly sick of it by the third time through.
The movie with Demi Moore and Gary Oldham was bizarre.

Pearl was damned FREAKY, that's what she was.
I know that a play adaptation of the novel exists, but I don't know how good it is.

It's true, he does make the same points over and over, however I love the plot and the concepts. But the book really doesn't get interesting until like chapter 13...so the beginning is a bit harsh.
The Crucible was great. I wish Miller would have left in the "deleted" scene. It was one of the best out of the entire play. (The one between Abigail and John Proctor in the woods)

Posted: 12/14/05 at 4:10pmThe Scarlet Letter is a great story, but the way that Hawthorne wrote it is SOOO slow and over-indulgent. And don't get me started on that godawful, Demi Moore movie.
