Caught another Oscar contender today and I must say I really loved it. It's dark, mystical, and alluring. Sally Hawkins performance was astounding. Almost the entire movie she is silent (with the exception of a short fantasy I won't spoil), and the level of depth she achieves from her facial expressions and signing alone is a marvel. Octavia Spencer is great as usual, but she's basically doing a less sassy version of Minny from The Help, so nothing really new we haven't her do before. Michael Shannon was a great antagonist that I loved to hate. His character really raises the stakes of the story. Richard Jenkins was great as well, and he had a sweet chemistry with Hawkins, even if his character is a bit underdeveloped from a story standpoint. The art design was absolutely stunning from the costumes to the various filming locations. I really hope this film gets a lot of love this awards season. It's quirky, dark, and truly unique.
