Taking Bush's faith-based programs and expanding them.

"Reaching out to evangelical voters, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is announcing plans to expand President Bush's program steering federal social service dollars to religious groups and — in a move sure to cause controversy — support some ability to hire and fire based on faith."

Obama is becoming a Republican. Happy now?

Do you even read past the first sentence, Goth? Cause even Republicans are quoted saying Obama's got a great plan.

With all the firestorm that Obama has had over his church and Jeremiah Wright, does anyone think that his pushing faith based programs smells to the heavens?

Funny, 'cause all the anti-Obama threads have traditionally had the smell of a desperate Goth. And I'm not talking about Merton Dingle. (obscure reference of the day) re: The Smell of a Desperate Obama

That's right. Do what liberals do. Don't discuss the issue, just make personal attacks.

Well Goth what do you think? I'm a left winger. I think churches SHOULD help feed the hungry and clothe the poor- but I don't want my tax dollars to support a catholic church that won't hire an atheist to run it's soup kitchen. I think Obama strikes a nice middle ground.

It's not a personal attack.

There just seems to be a lot of grasping at straws going on here, like the whole "roll one" Rolling Stone cover.

No, it's just a plan for the state to dictate to churches. Where's all that separation of church and state that liberals love so much?

It went out the window with "In God We Trust"

So I'm completely lost now. Are you FOR faith based initiatives or against them?

I go to church and we have a very large HIV/AIDS program and I would not want to see one cent come from the government. I believe strongly in the seperation of church and state.

I am also getting really tired of Obama pandering to the right. Had he taken some of these positions in the primary , he would not be the nominee.

It depends on who is administering them.

So, Goth, in other words, you have no opinion of your own on issues. Only on politicians?

Rant follows:

It's standard operating procedure for candidates to lean to the extremes of their party during a primary and them move to the center for the general. This is the only way to win, for ANYBODY. The only people who seem surprised by this are Republicans and his non-Republican detractors.

Obama IS a politician. And contrary to the constant drone of his detractors, his supporters have always been aware of this. He's never denied it. It's been his detractors who have set him up as a perfect non-politician by calling him the messiah, etc., knowing full well that when you set someone up as perfect, you can call them a failure and a sham every time they do ANY little thing you disagree with.

And it's ludicrous when people cry, "So much for change" every time he does something millions of politicians have done before him. Obama's message of change never meant he wasn't a politician. It never meant he thought EVERYTHING needed to change. It never meant that he didn't intend to practice politics. It meant he wanted to change what he thought were the destructive aspects of politics, like lying about WMDs and deregulating your friends businesses, and blocking anything getting done in congress because you can't stand to think that the other half of the country that doesn't agree with you might get their way on something.

The main reason nothing ever changes is this gridlock between right and left. If the President were a President for the WHOLE country, as Obama indicates he wants to be, instead of just half the country, maybe things wouldn't get so tied up in power struggles over which half of the country controls things now. Then maybe, things might get done. And no, I don't expect miracle change. But the country has to pick a positive direction and move that way. We can't stay the same. It's not working.

I'd also like to suggest that people who are tossing around the term, "separation of church and state" actually look it up to see what it really means.

While you're at it, you might also look up the terms flip-flop and pandering so you don't misuse them so often.

Rant over...feel better...moving on.

No Goth, that's the difference here. Bush has always governed from "You are WITH me or you are AGAINST me." The Democrats are the enemy and must be destroyed.

In general (not always) Democrats have tended to try to build consensus. Bill Clinton called it triangulating- "You want A, I want Z, maybe we could agree on L?"

Now you are free to argue that is a bad way to govern, but Obama is trying to find middle ground- to come up with plans and goals that everyone (or nearly everyone) can get behind.

I don't argue it's a bad way to govern, I argue that that is not Obama's plan.

Let's take gay marriage for example. Even though people in California have said they don't want it, Obama is all for it. Where's the middle ground there? Obama is pressing his own agenda and calling it middle ground.

Even though people in California have said they don't want it

So what is the middle ground? Cave to the bigots and let a tyrannical majority rule?
