Definitely!!! Now, it means I have to buy a Blu-Ray player, lol.
Since West Side Story is turning 50 next year, I can see a Blu-Ray release happening then.

i will be happier than a pig in u know what when wss gets it's blu ray release.
the only thing that saddens me is that natalie wood is no longer with us...can you imagine if she were around to give commentary and to hear her side of the dubbing issues?

Marquise---the HDMV channel has been showing a terrific hi-def transfer of West Side Story this month. It looks great and much better than the DVD. I will definitely upgrade when it comes out ... and I don't think it has a release schedule yet. But the HD version is ready to go apparently, and by my eyes, it looks stunning.
I'm only buying a few BDs now. I'm not replacing my entire collection (which would be impossible because it's around 1,600 now). But there are a handful of key titles that I will get, and Sound of Music and WSS are two of them.

wow i wish i had the hdmv channel but alas i can only afford basic cable because of more pressing financial obligations. i do however own a 1080 HDTV and a blu ray home theater system so i am more than ready for the WSS blu ray release.
i also am sticking to selected titles when upgrading my library. i see no reason to upgrade, say, "cactus flower" to blu ray but WSS and SOM...hell's yes!!!

I haven't bought it yet, but I did see the HD movie on that same (wonderful) channel: HDMV
It's part of my DishNewtowrk package.
The HD Music Man looks fantastic, and the old DVD can't hold a candle to it. In fact, the DVD transfer is pretty bad when viewed on a hi-def TV. It's very blurry and pixelated. I was worried that it was just a film that's not in good shape anymore.
Then I saw the HD version, and it's crisp, clear, and beautiful. Here's a review of the BD, and they think it's a pretty great transfer, too:

Posted: 2/24/10 at 1:47pmOh, Good! I really want to buy Music Man, but I was afraid it was just a BD pressing of the previous DVD. I hate it when they do that. I got the glorious BD of 2001 and loved it so much, I almost bought the BD of 2010, only to find out it's just the crappy DVD released on the BD format.

For those who care, An American In Paris and Gigi BDs both look terrific, too.
And they're both on sale now for $14.99 each at Amazon.

Gone With the Wind has a great sale price now, too:

Sorry for the tangent!
It looks incredible, and this is the same BD that was released with WAY too many packaging extras for $89 last Christmas. The film itself is well worth this sale price for the transfer.

Posted: 2/24/10 at 1:57pmone film i was hesitant to upgrade was grease but then i caved in and i was sure glad i did. it is a flawless transfer and a state of the art Dolby True HD audio transfer only enhances the experience if you love this movie and own a blu ray home theatre system i wouldn't pass grease on blu ray by.

Definitely Singin' in the Rain!
No announcement on it yet, but I know they did their "ultra resolution" remastering. So I'm sure it will be released on BD eventually.

Posted: 2/24/10 at 2:00pmwow! GWTW for 15.49?!!! on blu ray?!!! i am sooo getting it. i wasn't interested in getting that over inflated box set with all the bells and whistles. i don't have any room for over sized boxes but this edition and it's price really appeals to me! thanx for the heads up besty.

They've done the same thing with Casablanca, Marquise.
They've released it without all the crappy extra packaging stuff, and at a great price. I haven't upgraded this one yet, but I'm tempted.

okay, i need casablanca as well. warners is by far one of the best studios when releasing their catalog titles on blu ray. i'm just not a fan of oversized cumbersome packaging.
i wonder if warners will be giving the 1962 gypsy a blu ray release?
i couldn't turn down natalie wood in hi def.

Posted: 2/26/10 at 11:16amI actually really enjoyed "Gone With The Wind" with all the extras that the anniversary version has as well as " Wizard Of Oz". only only for $40.00 at Costco. They need to give Funny Girl the same treatment now. I just got a new Onkyo HDMI 7.1 sound system to complement my big screen and boy it makes it really hard to go back to watching regular dvd's. I never realized how much a good sound sytem really enhances it all.

Posted: 2/26/10 at 11:43amI'd love to have a great sound system, but I live in a loft and I really need wireless rear speakers, which starts getting pricey for something decent.
#21The Sound of Music Blu-Ray
Posted: 2/26/10 at 11:48amI have the wire running under the carpeting. There should be something you could do without going wireless ( they are not suppose to be that good anyways..)

Posted: 2/27/10 at 8:17pmI have a good 5.1 system, but I haven't upgraded yet. Soon, I hope!

Posted: 3/1/10 at 4:03pmWhat do you want to upgrade to? Not that much of a difference between 5.1 and 7.1. I mean there is a difference but not much. A good system should be rich in sound detail but that does not translate to loud. You should be able to hear everything without having to blast it.

I'm getting hardwood floors in July, so I would have to get area rugs to hide the wires, which might work out ok. It's incredibly difficult to pull up the carpet to run wires underneath the way it is. And given it is a loft, they would have to be run right smack into the middle of the entire loft, given the configuration. I also would need to get a sofa table to hide the wires going up to the speakers as they would be exposed to the middle of the room. Unfortunately, there is no feasible way to configure my place so that the rear speakers would be in front of a wall.
I'm thinking about getting the Sony micro surround system. I've read really positive reviews about the sound from those teeny little speakers.
