I don't think that it's like 'OmGzZ most amazing movie EVAR!!1", but I do really love it and I've watched it many many times.
Ouch, that really sucks.

In retrospect, the guy was a total loser. But you know, it hurts at the time!
... I think that happens with a lot of crushes.
I went to get my hair cut this morning. the hair dresser did not know what she was doing. I asked her exactly what she was doing every step of the way and I kept reminding her that I wanted my hair to be trimmed about an inch and a half and get long layers. Well I walked out and my hair was "trimmed" a good 4 inches! It looks like a poodle threw up on it! I refuse to let any of my friends see it. I'm wearing it up until it grows out.

I'm sorry. My hair looks completely uninspired. Every time I grow my hair out, it ends up looking flat and boring.
eek, smiles! I had to wear my hair up for a month or so last time I cut it because it was too short. But it'll grow out fast, hopefully! I like your avatar.

I promised myself I wouldn't come to bww because I have work to do, but I have to stick my nose in with my two cents about Donnie Darko.
Great, great movie. Siamese, I know you're entitled not to like it and I'm not trying to change your mind, but what was it? It didn't seem all that pretentious to me.
What does everyone think about Frank?
Jake > Heath in every single way. I've always thought Heath was a bit ugly. Does he even have eyes? :-X
Lexi, how long IS your hair? I think it's been up in most pictures I've seen of you.
Heath has pretty eyes. They're just dark. :)
Since I was too frightened to figure out the point behind the stupid rabbit, can someone tell me? Maybe then he won't be as scary. Or, maybe more scary.

It just wasn't really my thing. I can't really provide you with a good explanation -- you know when movies just sometimes don't "click" with you? I think that's what happened with me and Donnie Darko. A good portion of it was intriguing, but I felt as if the plot just twisted around one too many times without a real payoff. My earlier statement about the movie was very tongue-in-cheek and mainly inspired by someone I loathe -- please don't take offense!
What did you think of the test? (Sorry, I know I promised not to post about it again, but I promise that all my complaining is done!)
ETA: Em, it's at about my shoulders right now. Last summer, it was at my chin. I'm thinking of trimming it again. For whatever reason, my hair doesn't like to grow longer than a certain length.

One of my finals today went very well, and the other one didn't completely suck. I'm kind of pissed that the bookstore wouldn't even buy back the books from 3 of my classes, though.

Doesn't NYU only give you a couple dollars for each book anyway?

Nothing about him is really attractive to me. His face is disproportionate.
My theory on Frank, since Emcee won't watch it:
*spoilers*
I think Frank is a projection of Donnie's darker conscience- the little devil on his shoulder, so to speak. He makes Donnie burn down the house and tells him he's more powerful than everyone else, which gives him the stability he wants. I know that Donnie's obviously frightened of him, but he never disobeys or really takes a stand against Frank. When he finally accepts that Frank is wrong, (when Real Life Frank kills Gretchen) he can escape him. He's no longer his own priority, which allows him to be ok with sacrificing himself to save Gretchen.
Unless you're a subscriber to the theory that Donnie didn't mean to die in the end that he forgot the engine would fall on his room. Then my idea is shot.
But I like my idea, because it ties in well with existentialism, as does nearly everything in the movie. Donnie is alienated from society and his family in that they can never seem to understand one another. He's certainly alienated from God or any belief in a higher power ("The search for God is absurd?" "It is if everyone dies alone" "Does that scare you?") and ultimately, himself because he doesn't trust that he's completely sane or that he is what he wants/needs to be. That makes him vulnerable to Frank, who he can sometimes believe in because he seems so real, unlike any other kind of divinity.
I tried very hard to convince my teacher to let us watch Donnie Darko after we read No Exit and The Metamorphosis, but it didn't happen.
I'm happy that your finals went well. :)

Siamese, that makes sense. Everyone has those movies/books/bands that they just don't get. I will never understand what's so great about To Kill a Mockingbird or Coldplay.
Did you watch the Director's Cut, by any chance? I think that it's a lot more confusing and frustrating than the original. The DC is good, but only for people who have basic plot in their minds and want a little more detail.
I didn't think the multiple choice section was bad, but some of those essays.... oy. Even the ones I did know really well only took half a page to answer. I'm afraid I didn't write enough.

I'm going to be totally honest and say that I don't remember the movie to the extent I probably should and therefore can't really digest your theory, but it definitely sound very interesting. I absolutely love existentialism -- I don't necessarily subscribe to the theory, but I think it's so incredibly interesting. Sartre's No Exit is one of my favorite works of literature. The Metamorphosis is great as well, although not one of my faves.
Shoulder-length is good. :) Mine's a teeny bit past my shoulders now, but I'm not sure if I want to trim it just yet. It grows so, so fast.
I have to study for an open-book exam I have tomorrow, but I'm not sure HOW to study. Admittedly, I've done very, very little of the reading, so it's going to be a bitch of an exam, but I can't really fix that now, because I don't have the self-discipline to try to do the reading I've skipped the night before the exam. This thing, though, isn't just open book. It's open book, open notebook -- fairly standard, right? You can also bring the lecture slides *and* your laptop (the room has wireless internet).
The dark conscience thing is very vaguely what I got out of Frank, but I don't remember any of the specifics you wrote about. I will see it again, I guess. It's not that I *won't* see it; I said I was too busy being scared at the time to take anything else away, for the most part, but any chance to snap at me, right? In my defense in terms of what I do and don't remember, I watched it on a bus headed to a youth group trip in high school, so it wasn't really in an environment conducive to concentration.
I liked To Kill a Mockingbird, but I don't get why so many people love it the way they do. It was good, but...
We watched Donnie Darko in TOK, and it led to a really great discussion after.
Lexi, it depends on the book. In past semesters, I've managed to get back half of what I paid for some of my textbooks, but for some reason most of my books from this semester aren't being bought back.

I'm not a fan of Coldplay or To Kill a Mockingbird, either. Add Huck Finn to that list and I'm good to go.
I actually think I did. I watched it at a friend's house, so I'm not really sure. It also seems like one of those movies that you need some time to digest, so I really should try to watch it again someday. I wasn't enamored with The Matrix the first time I saw it, partially because I didn't totally "get it," but now it's one of my favorite movies (the first one, that is).
I didn't think the multiple choice section was bad, either, until I started looking up some of the ones I wasn't so sure about. The the fourth and especially the third essays... not so good at all. I actually managed to write a page and a half for most of them, though, so maybe I didn't do as badly as I thought. I stupidly messed up the easy second one, though, by not reading the introduction closely enough. I won't discuss the details on here for fear of people calling me out regarding AP policy.
Theory of Knowledge...it's a class you're required to take for IB. We're supposed to learn about the ways of knowing? I guess. We usually just watch movies or have debates.

Theory of Knowledge.
Lucky you, Mandi. We have very few people in my IB classes who are interested in discussing anything. My English class usually goes like this:
"Do we HAVE to read this?" "Can we watch the movie version?" "Did you see [insert lame action movie here] yet?" "I have math homework."
Practically everyone in my class is a 'math person'/future engineer and they don't understand the point of reading at all. My teacher is a pushover so she just lets them whine all period while I stare at the clock.

We have this online network where you can post your books for sale and sell them directly to other students. I think you can generally do better that way than you do selling them back to the bookstore.
Mandi, that actually sounds interesting.

The more I hear about IB, the more I'm glad it's not offered at my school.
Also, nia, your signature lines have been running through my head all day.
ETA: Haha, I love how Em and I reply with completely different opinions. Really, IB sounds good in theory, but it sounds kind of disorganized in practice.

I've recently discovered the lyrical value of A Model of Decorum and Tranquility and I love it. I used to just listen to the layer-y sound of the music.
May I ask what you're applying those lines to?

Go there. You'll be REALLY grateful then.
ETA- exactly. The ideas behind IB are really good- try to understand it from a world perspective, do a long-term project so you can learn about something you like, ect. But the methods are so wierd and the restrictions so harsh that it's really hard to get anything out of it at all. I really, really wish I hadn't taken it.
