My boyfriend and I went there to buy Mother's Day presents and such. (He had a giftcard, so that's where we went.) We walked around for like a half hour looking at stuff and playing with toys. Then I went to buy my mom one of those little mp3 players that are like $30. We waited in line for about 15 minutes, and when we get up there she scans it and it says that it's almost $100. Turns out it was marked wrong or something, so I went back and got the actual $30 one. The lady needed to void the other purchase, and since it was so expensive a manager had to come and do it. We stood there for almost 40 minutes waiting for a manager, because there were a million people in the store. THEN, she tells us that we have to pay for the cards and the gift that my boyfriend was going to buy at the front of the store. We go up there, and there are *2* lines open, so we spent another half hour in line.

Yikes, that's no fun.
The Wal-Mart in my town also only has a few lines open the majority of the time; it's like a line conspiracy. I tend to avoid it unless otherwise necessary.

I don't believe you usually have the opportunity to speak to faculty members during summer tours, no.
ETA: Or do what Em suggested.

nia, you should find contact information for whoever it is you might want to talk to, and ask if s/he would be available to meet with you when you're there. If they teach summer courses, they might have office hours, or something.
ETA -- you absolutely need to try to make a special arrangement. Faculty members are happy to speak with prospective students almost anywhere you go, but you need to appraoch them.

You never know. Do you know of one specific faculty member that you want to speak with? If so, perhaps you could email the person right now and ask.

Well, perhaps they would agree to speak with you over the phone, or talk to you via e-mail, if they're not around or an in-person meeting wouldn't work out. Most faculty members do live in the area, though, so if you show such great interest, they might be willing to work something out.
Also, speaking with faculty is an excellent thing to be able to say when you apply, because it'll show admissions that you're really seriously interested in the school, which is a big leg up.

I remember NYU had a question on the application that sounded as if they were trying to find out if you had truly researched the school. I BSed the question, but like Em said, it can't hurt to have a great response to one of those specific questions if asked.

As soon as I feel like figuring out Barnard's oddly configured spreadsheety schedule (whose dumb idea was it to put a damned spreadsheet on the English page?) I'll email some people.
I think I'm going to visit Barnard if I've only got time for one. NYU only offers a minor, getting up to Sarah Lawrence is a pain and I won't get into Columbia anyway so there's no point in falling in love with it.

A lot of the applications also have a section that asks something like "is there any additional information you feel we should know." You can put it there, too, if they don't ask specifically.

re: The pregnant 11 year old. That's crazy and wierd and disturbing. I have a disturbing story as well. Someone told me that a woman (at least in her 30s, mind you) at my synagogue was pregnant with twins and didn't know it. She went for her annual checkup and her doctor was like, "By the way, you're pregnant with twins and you're dilated 10 centimeters." She was about to give birth and she didn't even know it! Incidentally, her children are two of my least favorite children in the whole world. I don't know why, I just despise them.

nia, if the phone extension is just a four digit number, add 212+854 and that will put you directly through. If it's five digits, just add 212+85.
