So, I'm just returning from a trip to Rome where I spent a day in Vatican City. I was already disgusted by the Catholic religion and after strolling the halls, chambers and galleries of The Vatican I'm even MORE disgusted.

I mean seriously, do they really need that much gold, silver, art and gem encrusted ornaments? How about SELLING some of it and helping out a poor country or charities in need. What good are all these artifacts to just hang on walls and sit on tables. How incredibly vein to keep such heirlooms and riches when so many are in need.

It was truly disgusting.

re: The Vatican Maybe that's how God will love them. But first they need to get them some more holy land. Then it will be all okay.

I've been to the Vatican and I thought it was gorgeous. I'm no great lover of Catholicism, trust me, but suggesting that the Vatican should sell it's artifacts is akin to suggesting that Britain sell the crown jewels.

Or better yet, Geraldo.

I think all that gold is very good for them. I mean how else could have ever come up with that brilliant and necessary 10 commandments of driving thing. All that gold helps to focus on the true problems of the world, you know like speeding.

Sylar,

I thought the same thing.

I mean, the place is nice to look at, but who would want to dust all that crap?

Sylar, did you ever think the price of your ticket (I assume you went to the museum) could feed probably a family of four in certain countries for a week? So maybe you should thought about doing other things with your money?

Maybe you just should not have gone.

I am not a fan of Catholicism (sp?) but I appreciate all of the great art, and would rather have it all in one location for people to see than in the hands of private collectors and never seen publically again..

Elphaba- did you ever stop to think that some people can get into things free?

You think I'd actually give MORE wealth to the Catholic religion?

Catholcism.

First of all, I dislike the 'cult' description.

Second of all, although I know my religion is nothing to be proud of, if it weren't for the church, that art wouldn't exist at all! Sure, they took money and tithes left right and centre, but they facilitated the creation of Michelangelo, Raphael, Da Vinci and various other artists' greatest masterpieces.

And in the long run I think it makes more sense for them to keep the art and charge in to see it than to sell it. The money goes into missions, etc. They don't pay priests or other officers of the church, and they don't really commission art much any more.

Thirdly, I have been, and I enjoyed the trip a lot. In fact the only thing I disliked (memorably) was an annoying American tour guide who spoke really loudly in the sistine chapel, pointing to the ceiling and describing 'MeechelAinjello' up there on scaffolding, painting all day.

The rain we knew is a thing of the past -
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

One of the stupidest things I have ever read. Unless you are a truly selfless individual, that has no luxuries, your complaints are completely asinine. How much does your car cost? Ah, well you could have gotten one for much less and gave that money to charity. Shame on you, tsk tsk.

I would truly like to know how someone who is not a member of the Church, an Italian official or national without friends in high places, or someone not an official otherwise gets in to the Vatican Museum free...

There is always our friend the internet that allows us to get a peek at the museums and a fraction of the holdings they have the vatican

No one but their officials know the real extent of their collection...

If you knew anything about me, cruel2bekind, like some people on this thread do, you'd know that I don't own a car. Because I'm not old enough to drive. MY SCHOOL paid my admission, because we were on a trip with them.

Please don't make presumtions about me when you haven't got the slightest clue who I am.

I would like to know that, too, Elphaba. I have visited the Vatican, and it costs a good deal of money.
