"Huston is brilliant, and joins Closes's Cruella de Vil, Bates's Annie Wilkes, and Streep's Miranda as one of my favorite female villains of the past two decades."
As fun as I think Glenn Close is to watch in 101 Dalmatians, I kind of wish Joanna Lumley had played that part. She seemed like the perfect person for the role to me.
YAY!! I am watching the movie right now. HUZZAH!

Speaking of female villians in 20th century movies, I loved Lumley in "James and the Giant Peach."
I love Matilda! It was the firs time I laid eyes on Embeth Davidz. She was great on last week's Grey's Anatomy.
Back to The Witches...
I love this movie! Ivan and I watched it a couple of months ago and decided to buy it, but like Best12 said, there's no widescreen release. I forbid any kind of full screen crapola in my house, with the exception of things that are on VHS, taped things, etc.
I hate full screen. Why can't things be in the way the artist intended them to be? You wouldn't trim off the edges of a painting, would you, and then blow up the rest? NO! So quit doing it to movies.
Once The Witches is released in widescreen I'll get it.
Never seen the movie, but I LOVED the book when I was little. I was a huge fan of Roald Dahl, and this was one of my favorites of his. Even though it gave me nightmares...

This movie scared me. I was always frightened when she would remove her face and hair.

Lumley would have been a great choice, but Close was sooo deliciously evil. She was irresistable, and really took the role for all it was worth.
I loved the book, but didn't see the movie until years after I'd read it. My favorite part of the book was the big speech and explanation during the meeting about how the witches live and carry out their business in hiding, but that was cut short in the book. Still, it was scary to actually SEE what the witches looked like without their disguises instead of just imagining it.
