The worst over use of a word is.........cool, awesome like and basically!
So many people these days don't use adjectives when describing things. Everything is cool and awesome.
The word awesome.......means just that. The Grand Canyon is awesome. Sending a man to the moon is awesome. Standing in line at Starbucks to get your coffee, is not awesome. Same with the word cool. It means nothing..........
And, don't get me started on basically..........and LIKE........UGH!!!

I'm surprised "cool" has lasted this long.
It started in the '50s, so it's nothing new or trendy. It's been around for over half a century now.
nealb1---you really should give up on that one. Let it go! Just like grandma let go of her "gay."
(I know, I know ... who was Grandma's gay?)

Posted: 9/14/09 at 3:49pmYou're right - cool is from the 50's. I think I can count on 1 hand, the times I've used that word in my entire life.

Ha, ha..
Never use.........anyway.......as it's rather rude, and cuts people off and changes the subject back to you. There's a great line in "Love! Valor! Compassion!" that talks about the word "anyway" and how self-serving it is.

Posted: 9/14/09 at 5:08pmYes, "so" is overused, as is "awesome" and "amazing". However, creeping up on the list is the word "iconic". Grrrrr!

I hope to never hear or see the word stellar again.
Stella Stevens, ok but not stellar.

"Brilliant" is used to death in the Harry Potter movies.
It's their "awesome!"
Anyway ...

Posted: 9/14/09 at 8:21pmIt irritates me when people say 'well, basically' to start off a sentence. It always makes me think of this scene from Monty Python where one man says something like, "And now over to the Chairman of the British 'Well Basically' club," and it cuts to some guy who says "Well, basically..." and proceeds to tell a very long story and then dies, or something like that.

People around me use legit and chill instead of cool/awesome. I honestly prefer cool/awesome over legit/chill.

When one of my best friends starts a sentence with "so," it's just code word to me that a great story is forthcoming.
My daughter's favorite thing to say now is "But yeah." I told it should be the name of her autobiography or go on her tombstone.
