"Hey, gays—want another slap in the face? The departure of its artistic director means that New York City Opera's lofty plans to mount an opera based on Brokeback Mountain have fallen through. Sadly, we'll never hear the sweet sounds of Jack Twist's angelic tenor and Ennis del Mar's more dominant baritone on arias like, "You Know I Ain't Queer (Me Neither)," and "You Need to Shut Your Slop-Bucket Mouths, You Hear Me?" nor will we experience the full fury of a 300-person choir singing the "Carmina Burana"-esque climax accompanying Ennis's fateful first "taking" of Jack in their hillside pup-tent."

Does anybody want to contribute to a fund to buy ad space in Variety demanding this opera goes forward?
Only if it goes forward and right in to the pit. Yeah, I'll donate some bucks to that.
It was a rotten idea for an opera in the first place.
Two inarticulate characters who barely talk to each other are going to sing at me for 3-plus hours, nonstop.
No thanks.
They were really going to make an opera based on Brokeback Mountain?
I agree with Besty......that would have been a horrible opera.

Yeah, this feels less like a slap in the face and more like a fun little goose on the booty.
However, I believe the ballet is still a go.

I've always envisioned a country-western Jukebox musical.
Well, I just want to see Ennis singing "Back in the Saddle Again."
It would have to include I Love a Rainy Night and Queen of Hearts.

I Pitched A Tent The First Time We Met has always been my favorite.
Ummm....Rhinestone Cowboy?
I heard the creators were moving on to something more "edgy" and "current"...so they're doing THE CHILDREN'S HOUR.
