The politician season 2

We liked a few of the wackiest plot turns in the middle of Season 2. But once again, Brian Murphy wraps up another season of one of his shows with a nauseous overload of happy endings, treacle and a chance for Ben Platt to croon something at Marie's Crisis. Can't anything BAD happen to any of the main characters?

That said, Judith Light and Gwyneth Paltrow were delicious from beginning to end-- and I'd add Zoey Deutch to that list as Infinity. They alone were worth our time. (And unpopular opinion of the day: Bette Midler still can't act.)

I didn't think it was as good as Season 1, but I still liked it.

The main ensemble is still doing solid work, and it's nice to see these twentysomethings actually portraying twentysomethings (also, if Bette Midler doesn't win the Emmy this year, the Academy's insane).

My main problem with this season is that things ended too cleanly, with everyone winning. Season 1's finale was pretty great. We were thrust into a new setting, new characters, with a intense feeling of longing with the main characters. It made you excited for the cliffhanger of Payton running for Senator because it signaled a sense of normalcy and anticipation for what was going to happen. Season 2 didn't really do that, with everyone getting the ending they want, everyone in a pretty good place. When Judith Light offers Payton the Vice Presidency, even though that was his entire arc in Season 1, I thought "Why does he want it?". He's completely happy with his wife and son, his position, the insane amount of progress he's made in his district. I honestly don't know how they're going to continue this to Season 3.

That said, I'd still recommend it. I laughed out loud at the jokes. As usual with Ryan Murphy shows, the costume design and color palette is gorgeous, and the cast still has great chemistry and the new characters fit in immediately (again, Bette Midler is probably my favorite part).

I think Platt is a wonderful singer but as an actor he needs more training. Some of his scene work rings false to me. I like the idea of the series and the elements of politics it pokes fun at. I would say that Paltrow has the best handle on things.


What I find interesting is how some of the newer series that take place in the past (Perry Mason, Penny Dreadful) have direct parallels to what is going on today.

I would recommend Bully. Coward. Victim. On HBO....a documentary on a Roy Cohn...the most interring aspect being his influence on Donald Trump.

I would say his acting was better in Season 1, where he had more of an arc. This season was more about his campaign team and his opponents. Platt's still the star, but he doesn't get as much opportunity to shine. This season felt much more like an ensemble piece.
