Congratulations to Melanie Moore- a well deserved award. The smug and utterly self congratulatory Lythgoe didn't miss the opportunity to slam the recent NY Times article where professional dancers "reviewed" his show. Even so far as to name some of the dancers, Lythgoe in his slimey manner chose to publicly come out against the article and the dancers. Hr regularly pats himself on the back with frequent announcements about EMMY nominations his show receives, but this one takes the cake. What a creep.

Posted: 8/12/11 at 2:10amI'm sorry I missed his comments on that article but certainly look forward to reading them or seeing a video. I thought it was a really great article and agreed with pretty much everything the dancers had to say about the show.

I'm also glad that I'm not the only one who sees Mr.Lythgoe as "slimy"!
And one more thing. Didn't they have Katie Holmes on there as a judge the other night!? I rest my case...

He replied to a public article in public. He didn't reveal any secrets, reveal hidden names that weren't already public. I don't think it was slimey at all. Maybe a little misplaced, or maybe inappropriate, but not slimey. I think he had every right to publically address what he thought was a bashing.
I didn't read the article, so I'm not saying anyone's comments are right or wrong. I think Lythgoe lacks TACT, but that doesnt make him slimey.
I'm sure he thought he was being protective and sticking up for his dancers.
FWIW, I do believe that the show has done a lot for dance...particularly for the men.

"That’s why the five each said they would, if asked, appear on it as guests to promote their field (as Ms. Peck did last year when she performed on “Dancing With the Stars”)."
That statement makes everything they are talking about pointless.
“These dancers wouldn’t stand up to dancers in New York.” -Brittany Marcin.
That's an awfully broad statement. True for some but definitely not true for all. Like being a Rockette is the end all be all of dance.

Posted: 8/12/11 at 6:32pmAfter reading the article, I wholeheartedly disagree with your assessment of Nigel Lythgoe. He had every right to say what he said, and then some. This group comes off like a bunch of self-impressed, supercilious prigs, who would sell-out in a second, if the opportunity presented itself. The article is in the New York Times, not Dance Magazine. Why shouldn't he defend his show and his cast of dancers and choreographers?

Posted: 8/13/11 at 12:30amRegardless of the article, he's a self -promoting, arrogant and shameless snob. Half the time he doesn't know what he's talking or preaching about when it comes to dance. Sure, he produces the IDOL, one of the biggest reality show of all time, but that has nothing to do with having class or knowledge of the art form. And let's not even begin on his homophobia. I just find him and his manner smug and condescending.

Well, he is British.
And sorry, he does know about dance, that was his first career.
You might not agree with him, but that doesn't make him wrong.

If I remember correctly, he really took offense to the comments that the dancers on the show couldn't ever make it in NY.
He complemented the one person he called out by name, but totally disagreed with her.
It's not like he overheard something in a coffee shop. They gave a public interview, he responded in kind.
