I have noticed that the majority of the people here on the board type "def" instead of definitely, including myself. I think we just do not know how to spell the word correctly. Is that true? I would have to say it is the toughest word for me to spell.
nope, I'm just lazy

I cannot spell this word at all. There are just a few I never remember, but I always take a stab at them anyways because i hate shorthand.
I avoid that word whenever possible. It is the one word I always screw up.
I definitely know how to spell definitely. In my freshman year of college I picked up two habits surrounding the word... The first, was the tendency to say "def" instead of the full word. Later, that gave way to using the full word with alarming frequency. Now, I definitely say it far more than I should.

I know how to spell definitely... I also know how to spell realize, which is another word everyone and their mother spells incorrectly... it's spelled with a Z people, not an S.
I don't use it too often though... what I do use too often are ridiculous and ridiculously.
If in Heaven you don't excel, you can always party down in hell...
I use definitely every now and then. I love it when people run spell check and it ends up being "defiantly".
Yeah, I always get the squiggly red line under "definately" whenever I type it...Always, ALWAYS spell it wrong! There are a handful of others too...every time! You'd think I'd learn, and yet, nope!
I learned it when I was about 5; I came across it in a book and sounded it out. "DEF-IN-IT-ELY".
That's how I spell it, and, when I'm lazy, how I say it.
I always say "Def." because I am lazy and don't feel like spelling it out and then realizing that I spelled it wrong.

Actually, I now know how to spell it...I am definitely glad I started this thread!
I always remember that it's "definite-ly".
That makes it easier to remember that there is no 'a' in it.
The one word I CANNOT spell is:
*drumroll please*
EXCERSIZE
Excersise?
Ecsercize?
Exercise?
Exercize?
Exersize?
Ecxersize?

That's a toughie too, Flowery. I always hated 'because', 'wierd' and 'Wednesday'. It took me forever to learn to spell them.

Oh.
Well... I was, uh, proving my point. I meant to do that.
Flowery, the correct spelling is number 4: exercise. :)
Really? No 'z'? Go figure... I doubt I'll ever figure that one out. I usually write 'excersize'. I think people get the point.
I learned Wednesday in 1st grade when we separated it into Wed-NES-day. We were all up to the Sega Genesis by then, but we still had our old NES's.
I definitely don't have trouble with definitely. But I'm a good speller in general. It's a pet peeve.

I have to think about it...
But I write def because I am lazy!
My grandmother spoke German as a second-language, and she always pronounced "Wed-nes-day" the way it looked, so I've never had trouble spelling it. Same for "Feb-ru-ary". Unfortunately, I have grown up mispronouncing "turquoise", which was her favorite color. (I say "tur-QUOISE")
The teacher asked her class to use the word "Definitely" in a sentence..she started with little Mary, who said "The sun Definitely comes up in the morning."
Very good, Mary - now Jane, you try...
"The Moon Definitely comes out at night"
Nice try Jane, not as creative but good.
Teacher worked her way through the students one at a time -saving Little Johnny for last (she was worried, because Johnny had a pottie mouth and always looked for an excuse to use it in class) Finally she got to Johnny who said:
"I have a question first."
Yes Johnny?
"Do farts have lumps in them?"
Uh, no Johnny, I don't believe they do.
"Then I have definitely sh*t my pants!"
