This zesty 1936 classic stars the peerless Irene Dunne as the closeted :) Theodora Lynn who writes a novel as Caroline Adams that shocks her hometown of Lynnfield. Nommed for an Oscar this perf was her breakthrough as a comedienne of the first rank with Carole Lombard and Myrna Loy. Sad to say none of these women ever won an Oscar.
Go to TCM now and watch how to "act" comedy along with Thomas Mitchell and Melvyn Douglas.
I must set my Tivo for the next time this is on.
Irene Dunne is one of the most under-rated actresses EVER.
(At the time she was big, but today her name does not carry the recognition it deserves)
The Academy should of given her a Special Oscar....Damn, she lived to be 92. After five Oscar Nominations for Best Actress, the Academy never did....I really didn't know who she was, until I saw her in "I Remember Mama" in the 90's....(my favorite Irene Dunne Movie)
I missed most of this movie last night, but surfed by it, just before we started up a DVD... and WOW. Irene Dunne is incredible. Not that this was news to me, but sometimes you just sit back and marvel, you know?
Yes, ladies and gentlemen... THIS is how it's done.
This is yet another classic film NOT on DVD. The studio is Columbia; write to them.
The director died young; I believe his last film was with Joan Crawford, THE LAST OF MRS. CHEYNEY in 1937.
THEODORA is a rare video; those who appreciate sophisticated screwball comedy and want to learn timing should find this film.
