My family has Cablevision due to the fact that we live on Long Island and the price for our DVR service is the same as previously mentioned. We didn't have to pay for the DVR cable box. All we had to do was bring in our old ones and trade them in for a new DVR box. Even though we have it on two TVs in the house, the price for those DVR boxes plus our monthly subscription to HBO on demand comes to a grand total of about 24 bucks a month for all three things.

I also don't think that TIVO offers the option to skip commercials anymore. I think that on a TIVO just like on a DVR you have to fast forward through them. But, at least on my DVR you can fast forward pretty damn quickly to the point where there is only a second or two gap between the beginning of the commercial break and the end and when the show is starting back up again.

I've had most of these and presently have:
One tivo box left...used to have 4.
One TW cable dvr
Two Verizon Fios dvrs

I definitely prefer the tivo interface, but Fios has a jump button that you can click 3 times and get thru the commercials.
You can still ff thru commercials with tivo, and I love that it jumps back if you pass when your show comes back on.
I'm not a fan of the TW cable box (it may have upgraded since I got mine) because you cant list your recordings in files...each show is listed seperately. This is a great feature of the other two.

My tivo has a lifetime membership...the others were 7 bucks a month. It did break, but I opted to have it fixed...it took awhile to be repaired, but it only cost me 50 bucks.

The best machine I ever had was a pioneer dvrw with tivo. It recorded your tivo'd shows to DVD so easily a 4 year old could do it. It died and I think a tear trickled down my cheek.

I have a tivo and a Comcast DVR. We bought the tivo years ago, and it's a single tuner, non-digital machine. In other words, highly impractical nowadays. However, we bought the lifetime subscription, and we've gotten our money's worth. We keep the tivo in our bedroom, and record most of our shows on the Comcast DVR. I consider it a ripoff that tivo has no upgrade option. The advantages of tivo over Comcast is that I can schedule the tivo remotely, and I can move programs to DVD via our wireless network. However, it doesn't handle digital or HD, and degrades our TV picture.
