Here's the deal. You have the ability to travel backward or forward in time to any time or place you desire. You can spend only 24 hours and do only one thing. What would you do? Why? If you did something that might change the course of history, what do you think/hope the end result of your action would be?

Sad as it is that it's come to this, I think I would go back and fix the ballots in Florida.

changing history would not only change things perhaps for the good, but also the bad.........it changes EVERYTHING....so, let's say you were able to change JFK being killed....he remains president, we get along worse with Russia, and nuclear war ensues.

The deal with time travel is you may observe, but NOT change of affect anything or anyone. In almost any sci-fi book or movie this is paramount........

you cannot only change things for good......it will also change them for bad......

ok, so say she does......the Kaiser remains in power. Germany get's bigger, and bigger.......the other Royal familes get more nervous as Germany is getting too big, world war ensues, but the US does NOT get involved as it's a European problem (and no change of it escalating outside of Europe). Britain is defeated by the Kaiser, Germany allies with Russia, the Russian Royal family is never killed, communism never happens, and Europe stagnates under German-Russian rule. Because of this, the many german scientists that came to the US DON'T and we never become a world power, so in the end, we are at the mercy of Germany anyway........
We fight Japan alone, and still millions die.

again, nothing can be changed in history as it affects everything.

Try this. You go back in time, and give your grandmother a ring when she is a child. When she grows-up and dies, she wills the ring to you, youget the ring and go back in time and give your grandmother a ring, and so on......where did the ring originally come from?

Very simple. Go back to NYC in the 40's & explore

I would bring with me a bag full of things like a cell phone, gameboy & cassette player (i do not have an i pod )and let people know where we are in 2006.

To see Times Square in its hey day & go into the Roxy & Paramount. I do not ask for much. I pick 1940 so I can also go to flushing meadows to see the fair

so you are back in NYC with a cellphone, gameboy, and casette player........people are interested, although they are MORE interested in the war in Europe......the Germans in the middle of a losing war with us are VERY interested.Word gets around, They take your items AND they take you back to Berlin, those items allow them to discover things no one would discover say until the 1960's..(and you tell them things about the war that allow them to do things differently)...Germany wins the war, and we are all typing in German now.

There is no way out.......changing something in the time-space matix and it changes everything.........The smalled ripple can change major things.

You could not change history

As far as showing them stuff from now, you take their mind off life back than & let them know ultimately they will win the war. They do not get to keep the stuff .

None of this is happening but if it could I would take my chances

yes you can, and that's the point.........and I would never take chances........as in your example that I amended....my father ends up fighting the Germans in South Carolina, and his plane is shot down, he dies, I am never born, hence I am not typing here..........so, guess I'll go shopping.

If you can travel in time, you CAN change history.......it's just that it may change for good, but it will also change for bad.

We shall never know

Another type of travel could be teleportation (as in The Fly). Imagine being here & in an instant you are in Paris or Venice or maybe even Short Hills NJ ( where my brother in law lives)

now roxy that, before 9-11, excited me. Breakfest in Palm Springs, lunch in Munich, the theater that evening at the Bolshoi in Moscow.......but, terroists could also do that......so now, for me it's more scary......and I can see some of the Stans, Israel, China, etc etc not allowing the portals in their countries....imagine if the Stans were overrun with American tourists saying how "great" life is here.....
look at history........history is not a happy place youwant. We have to be very careful with inventions from now on......

Elphaba, I actually agree with you.

While I was making a joke, I do believe unintended consequences are more likely to make any change for "the good", something you do not envision.

You got to live your life & not be afraid

The people in the twin towers went to work as they normally did. When your time is up that is it. You could give up smoking & get killed by a drunk driver. I just had a colonoscopy. Polyps keep coming back in the same area (near thinnest part of colon near the appendix) & next time he may have to operate to remove that small area. I am however trying not to think about next year

I turn 60 August 15. For my birthday, my wife is taking me to Vegas. We are planning for our 10 th wedding anniversary to spend 2 weeks in my wife's favorite city Venice .Our honeymoon was Rome, Florence & Venice.

We are living our lives and not worrying about things over which we have no control. We made friends with people ( will not say how & where we met them ) but it did not work out. We were totally wrong about them and had no idea it would turn out as it did. I did what I felt I needed to do to salvage it but one party on their end , for whatever reason, did not want it salvaged and had issues with me. To my dying day I will not know what but no use crying over spilt milk. It is the past and it is over & done with . I believe it was meant to be & all in all it was for the best for us ( my wife and I )

We totally misread one party . My wife is glad it all came out and although very surprised and sad in a way but it all happened for the best

yup......and I think unintended usually mean the worst....sigh......like what how the wind will affect my trip to Costco in a few minutes......or how will it affect the people triming my palm trees right now, who could fall, and probably are not bonded....EEK!

Palm trees ? Do you live in Florida ? Our best friends moved to Davie Florida a little over a year ago and we visit from time to time. They live right by a canal and had damage during the last hurricane. They also live near the Hard Rock casino in Seminole. Very nice place which we will return to as soon as we drop our bags off at their house next time.

roxy, who said anything about not living my life? You took a snippet of what I wrote and RAN with it. I do live my life, but I am also vigilent....something every American that travels outside of the country must do these days (thanks to Alolf Bush....I no longer wear American college sweatshirts in Europe, for example......
Roxy I am 52, and as I've said before have two terminal illnesses and I keep going, and frankly rarely think about them (unless I'm haveing a bad "med" day.
One of them will indeed
kill me someday, and not the one people may be thinking........so not sure what your point was.....we all live our lives.....but there is nothing wrong with paying attention to what's going around you as you do......yes, when your time is up, it's up....but no reason to hasten is cause you (the generic you) were not paying attention to things around you.....

as an aside, I loved Venice.......but Rome, my God....few places compare to Rome......Vienna, maybe.

no, we live in Palm Springs, CA........in the desert, 2hrs east of LA, unlike Florida we rarely have humidity.......

I'll find the name of a restaurant we REALLY like in Venice....they had the best spaghetti.......off of the Rialto bridge.

Elphaba, c'mon, you created all those scenarios you stated would happen had there never been an Adolph HItler. We have no idea if any of that would occur. But we DO know what would not have happened had his mother gone and had an abortion-and I'm going with that as my choice!

You probably couldn't make her have an abortion. I'd just push her down the stairs. re: Time Travel

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be enbered with your old nonsense. ~ Emerson

Gas is also a good idea, but falling down the stairs usually works the first time, at least, it does on the soaps.

there's so many good places in venice to eat in roxy......good city for eating, and just getting lost
