Hi Everyone,
I'm curious about tipping for salon services. Do you tip the person that waxes your eyebrows? If so, how much?
How much do you tip the hair washer, and the stylist?
I'm just never sure if i'm doing the right thing when it comes to tipping!
Thanks!

Hi,
Tip well. At least 20 percent.
Hair washer- $5.00
Hairdresser- (20 Percent) I usually tip $10.00 for a blow dry and $20.00 if they cut it and style it. I tip a lot because I go to the same person and they do a fantastic job.
(This is for a very fancy salon in Manhattan, if it costs 20 to get your hair done tip 20 percent)

When I tip in a salon, I make sure I shove evenly, with both hands, and the cow is sure to go over every time.

When does tipping stop? Tipping in a salon is unheard of in Australia and I would guess in most other countries other than America. I once had a haircut in Los Angeles and had never heard of tipping the hairstylist, needless to say after paying (for the haircut) and not tipping I was given a very frosty exit.
I tend to think along the lines that you have already paid for the service so why tip? If you received the cut/style or whatever and weren't all that happy with it would you still tip?

Posted: 2/17/07 at 8:52pmIn the US (I can't speak for other countries) tipping is generally expected for any personal service provided to you. Having worked in a service industry, I tend to overtip, but I don't think I've ever not tipped at all.

Posted: 2/17/07 at 9:53pmI'm grateful to Corine for the pointers on tipping in a salon. Now how about tipping in a parlour? Say, for a half-and-half or an around-the-world?

Posted: 2/17/07 at 10:12pmDoes it depend on the happiness of the ending? That might be hard to quantify.

Posted: 2/18/07 at 2:33amI go to an upscale salon. My stylist charges $140 for a cut. He also owns the salon. I tip him and whichever girl shampoos me. Then sometimes when he is busy, he does the cut and a different girl does the blowout. So then I have to tip HER. Heaven forbid I have highlights, too, because that would be a third girl to tip. Here is my question... Should he be tipped since he OWNS the salon? Not like he is working for tips. I always feel like I shouldn't really have to.
