How much do you tip?
Do you tip even when the service is bad?
At a nicer restaurant, do you tip the Maitre' D'?
What are YOUR tipping tips?
use lots of lube and use nice long strokes...
oops wrong kind of tipping
Not if it's a gay friendly establishment!

LMAO, Marquise!!!
Well this thread went down the toilet pretty quickly...
I tip high. I hang out with a lot of servers so I know their pain. The world will not end if my Coke needs refilled.
I never tip less than 30%.
As a bartender, I'm often shocked and often pleasantly suprised at people's tipping habits.
Sometimes, I'll put together an order of 5 or 6 high-maintenance drinks (L.I. Iced Teas, etc.) and get nothing. Other times, I'll serve an orange juice and get $3-$4.
I have to do a lot of work for these people, wash their dirty germy glasses, etc. A buck would be nice. As a result I always over tip. The worst tip I've ever left is 15% and I was quiety seething at how bad the service was.
Here's a good resource for consumers about gratuities:
CNN Money: How Much to Tip?
on the serious "tip" I tip the normal going rate. I do tip the maitre'd. I tip a little higher if the service is above average and just the going rate if it's average or below because I was a waiter once and it's not an easy job.

I tend to tip over, especially if the service was good. Last night I went to a really good restaurant, and my friend used to work with our waiter years ago. On a $85 bill, we gave him $45. He was very good, and recommended wines, our meal, etc.
"I tend to tip over"
I do the same, but that's only after a night of drinking.

My mother is a waitress, so she tips well at restaraunts. Since that's the way I was brought up, I usually tip at least 20%, usually more.

I usually tip 20% (double whatever taxes come out to).
Ever since I waited tables in my 20s, I tip 20 percent unless the service is lousy. I know what wait persons go through and it is NOT an easy job - which is why I could never do it in NYC. I say if the food is hot, what you ordered, and served in a timely fashion by a pleasant server - give 'em 20 percent. It is the only way they pay their bills.
ck - well, we were drinking last night too - so I was tipping over!
We went to Barrage (I had a couple Grey Goose apple martini's) and then the restaurant we went to was Chimichirri Grill - highly recommended.

You know what, I don't even get that Marquise, and I probaby don't want to.
I usually always tip 20% unless they really, really sucked or were rude. Then I am a bitch.
I can't see a bitchy bubble, is that even possible?
As a former waiter myself, I tip 20% for good attentive service, 15% if the waiter just "did his job", not rude, but nothing special either, and leave change if the waiter is horrid... you know, rude, can't be bothered with you, your water glass sits empty for 20 minutes, doesn't check-in on the table if the kitchen is slow... I leave change saying "I know I need to leave a tip and this is what you earned". Not leaving anything would imply I just forgot.
Hm... I don't frequent restaurants with Maitre'D's...
25% if I'm completely satisfied with the service. 15% if the service is lacking or the waiter/waitress is inattentive. I would have to be completely disgusted to leave less than 15% or no tip at all.
It's a shame that compensation at most salaried jobs isn't dependent on the whims of the moody public.
Realizing that most servers are compensated poorly by the house, it's always good to try to prove a point by leaving nothing, or worse an insult of change.
Don't give me the whole, "But, if I do a bad job, I'll lose my position" argument. If a waiter is bad every day, then they will lose their job too.
Next time you have a bad day at your desk job, consider it if you weren't paid for your work that day.
You keep changing the world, Shamrock. One meal at a time.
PS- I only bartend for fun. During the day, I make more money and have more job satisfaction than 90% of my patrons.
"You keep changing the world, Shamrock. One meal at a time. "
That cracked my ass up.
You're not a real 'lampshade on the head' sort of guy, are you Shamrock?

I beileve whole-heartedly that the world would be a better place if every person had to work for 6 months as a server in a restaurant or in a retail store. Waiters have "Bad days" that have NOTHING to do with how hard they work or how well they do their job. They have to deal with the kitchen, the host, the bus boys, the bar and the public simultaneously to deliver a meal.
If I get bad service, I'll usually acknowledge it (In a pleasant way, as in "Man you must really be getting slammed tonight- I haven't seen you in ten minutes!") and see if an explanation or improvement is forthcoming. I typically tip 20% for "good" service, more or less as necessary. If i don't think I should "Subsidize" or "Reward" someone for doing their job, I head over to Burger King for a delicious Whopper I pick up at the counter myself.
I've been known to leave a Hamilton on the bed side table after having picked up a whopper.
