I beileve whole-heartedly that the world would be a better place if every person had to work for 6 months as a server in a restaurant or in a retail store. Waiters have "Bad days" that have NOTHING to do with how hard they work or how well they do their job. They have to deal with the kitchen, the host, the bus boys, the bar and the public simultaneously to deliver a meal.
If I get bad service, I'll usually acknowledge it (In a pleasant way, as in "Man you must really be getting slammed tonight- I haven't seen you in ten minutes!") and see if an explanation or improvement is forthcoming. I typically tip 20% for "good" service, more or less as necessary. If i don't think I should "Subsidize" or "Reward" someone for doing their job, I head over to Burger King for a delicious Whopper I pick up at the counter myself.

Posted: 3/30/05 at 2:51pmI agree Joe... and I think (hope, at least) that one can tell the difference between a good waiter having a bad day and a bad waiter. I've had some dreadful people as waiters, who get mad when you order something else, when you sit at the table at little longer than they wanted you to. I also put the service I get in perspective with the restaurant I'm at... if I'm at a $25+ a plate restaurant, I expect excellent service. Honestly, I don't care if you're having a bad day, I'm paying way to much for my meal to get attitude.

hmmm, I tip 20% if the service is good at a restaurant.
sometimes more, if the server is a friend and does a good job, or is someone who just goes out of their way.
If I have bad service, I tip little, and inform the manager if the bad service was because of the server. I never tip poorly if it was beyond their control.
I have never not tipped, but once left a nickel as the person was so rude and insulting, they deserved nothing more.
I never am in a bar anymore, but when I was I left whatever change I got back, or a lump tip at the end of the night.

Posted: 3/30/05 at 5:38pmIndeed, tipping at establishments with "tip-jars" is optional, but it's nice. I work in an ice cream store, and every now and then I get complete a$$holes who will make me scoop like, four quarts for them and then just toss a quarter in the tip jar. It may not sound like it, but scooping FROZEN ice cream for four hours straight is HARD WORK. Furthermore, it's downright insulting when people tip TWO freakin' CENTS for a 20$ purchase. People do that ALL the time.

Posted: 3/31/05 at 1:32pmI always overtip, unless the service is really bad. Last week, for example, I was at Johnny Rocket's and I ordered a chicken sandwich with no mayo, and it came DRENCHED in it. DRENCHED. That waiter didn't get a very good tip, needless to say.

Posted: 3/31/05 at 1:34pmWhat did you tip the chef then, Rose?
#46re: Tips for Tipping
Posted: 3/31/05 at 1:40pmThe chef? Crap, you're supposed to tip the chef now?

Posted: 3/31/05 at 1:44pmI was being bitter. Back when I used to wait tables, I could remind the chefs 10 times about an order deviation, and 9 times out of 10 they'd forget it, if they were slammed.

Tip jars at Starbucks? er....I'll just pretend I don't see it.
Tip Jars at an ice cream parlor? Well, maybe if I had them pack a gallon or make a double banana split.
Now, the ultimate insanity: I saw a tip jar at 7-11! That is going too far.
