Hi Guys! I am currently a musical theatre major freshman at The University of Miami, and I am applying transfer to Tisch at NYU. I applied to the Steinhardt program last year and did not get in. Does anyone know how many transfers Tisch takes and if I would have to stay an extra year if I tranferred? Any information you could give me would be extremely helpful! Also, if anyone here is in the CAP21 program, I would love to talk to them. Please send me a message with your screenname or something. Thanks!!
:)

Posted: 11/4/05 at 4:30pmI'm not in Cap but in another studio. Usually, Cap will take only 3 or 4 transfers a year, depends on space. Not sure how the selectivity for transfers relates to freshman admission between Tisch and Steinhardt but Cap is much more selective for freshman admission than Steinhardt is so if you didn't get into Steinhardt, I honestly wouldn't count on getting into Cap. Not to discourage you but it's good to be realistic. Transfers generally have to begin in first year studio classes. If you want to chat directly with a Cap student, the Tisch or NYU livejournals are a good place to start.

I wouldn't quite say that if you didn't get into Steinhardt you won't get into CAP, because they are looking for different qualities and different sorts of voices, plus CAP looks at your acting more closely than Steinhardt does...it's different.
But yeah, still, it's difficult because there isn't much space but I know that CAP took more people this year than in years prior, so maybe the program is expanding just a smidge. Maybe after a year somewhere else learning whatever you learn at Miami, you'll have a easier time getting in.
(I'm in a different studio as well, in case you're wondering)

You're right that the focus is different in Cap than it is in Steinhardt but looking at it purely by numbers, the chances are slim. It's much more difficult to get into Cap than to get into Steinhardt so that was the reason for my comment. I think that even if chances are slim, individuals who are interested in it should by all means audition, as long as they're realistic about their chances. Anyway, best of luck, katia. :)

Thanks for all your honesty and advice. :) I actually did get into the Steinhardt program but my grades were not up to par with NYU standards. I was waitlisted and told to retake the SAT, but there was no way I was going to get up to a 1350 or whatever they wanted in a few months (I only got a 1250). In any case, thank you guys so much, I will keep in mind everything you said.

My audition for Tisch is two weeks from tomorrow.
I am confident with my academics--I just hope my audition goes smoothly!
