Grilled cheese - a perfect comfort food.
You said a mouthful Goth.
My favorite kind is grilled swiss on rye with bacon and tomato.
Me too Jane! Only minus the bacon.
There is a diner on 57th next to where Coliseum Books was that used to make the best grilled swiss on rye with tomato sandwiches I've ever had.

When I was pregnant the deli in my office building had grilled cheese and home made tomato soup for a special every Friday. I always had grilled Swiss with tomato with my soup. I only wish bacon had been an option. Yum.
I wish it wasn't midnight. I'd make a grilled cheese.
You can . Everyday is grilled cheese day.

It's possible to make your own, Taz. I make a pretty good one myself!
Grilled cheese and bacon, well done ON BOTH SIDES.
I send it back if it's well done on one side only. And tip lavishly if it arrives as ordered.
(Well, lavishly at coffee-shop/diner prices at any rate.)
It IS possible to make it oneself. I use thick slices of olive bread from my favorite local bread baker and add some sweet Vidalia onion slices--one of my all-time faves.
It is possible, but I'm that bad of a cook that I even screw up grilled cheese.
I can boil water and use a microwave. And in emergencies I can bake something already prepared in the oven.
No judgements!
Their grilled swiss on rye was all about the way they got the rye to be like it was toasted.
Absolutely no judgements. Indeed, the day you find a diner that makes the "right" grilled cheese--however one defines it--is a red-letter day.
My search ended back in the 1990's at the University Diner at 12th & University--the perfect grilled cheese! The crispy-but-tender fries!! The Reuben deluxe!!!
Then they closed and I was sad.
That was my diner when I was in NYU Addison.
It was right between my dorm (which was on Union Square) and the campus.
And they were 24 hours!
>sigh!< LOVED that place.
It was perfectly located for post-Roxy disco fries on the way home to the E Village.
Took me years to realize those were **mirrors** and the place was actually half the size I had thought.
