I can't believe I haven't seen Velvet Goldmine yet but if it's as good as Far From Heaven, then it will be amazing.
...or "Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story" --- a 47 minute bio-pic he made illegally in 1987 using actual Barbie dolls as the cast.
No joke. It's twisted, tragic and hilarious!

SUPERSTAR is one of my favorites...you find yourself feeling more empathy for the dolls than you would for actual human actors.

Velvet Goldmine as good as Far From Heaven?
Don't worry, it's not.
At one point I started keeping a tally in my head of how many times I could see the boom mic floating into frame and it was so irritating that I began to tally up 25 cents per sighting, thinking that's how much of a refund I'd ask for on my way out of the theater. It happened so many times they ended up owing me money.
Great soundtrack tho.
yeah, i basically turned up the sound and did other things until i heard a song come on and then just enjoyed that. has there been a decent marc bolan bio-pic?

Velvet Goldmine is a personal favorite of mine. Any film that brings together Ewan Mcgregor, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers and Christian Bale is tops to me. Also Toni Collette, of course. And just listen to her amazing vocal work. She made me believe she was an American putting on a fake British accent, brilliant. Love Her.
I've only seen SAFE, FAR FROM HEAVEN and POISON...not really my kind of filmmaking and I'M NOT THERE doesn't look too promising either. I don't see him as someone with a strong style or a point of view--granted, I haven't seen SUPERSTAR, which could easily change my mind.
Athough I did enjoy the prison section of POISON for less-than-cinematic reasons.
But I'm not a particularly big fan of Gus Van Sant either (TO DIE FOR gloriously excepted) so what do I know?
