This is the story of a horny 16 year old boy, who loses his virginity at his birthday party to an over-zealous and very eager femme fatale. She sashays over to him and coos to him, "Tonight, ooh-ooh. This is the night you'll see the light..."

The "light" in this song is a metaphor for her womanhood. The womanhood she is so freely giving away as a special, sweet birthday present. It's a sweet 16 indeed and the darker the berry, the sweeter the juice.

The urgency as the song's central theme is repeatedly hammered into the listener's head: "Toooniiiight you'll finally see the liiiight".

Lead singer James J.T. Taylor simulates the protagonist's orgasmic crescendo in the last verse and chorus with his searing and piercing falsetto.

He pleads: "Tonight I want to dance with you" and the dance is the horizontal mambo.

When it's all over you too will be reaching for a cigarette.
