The Road to Perdition was considered a recent masterpiece in cinematography.

Current directors who always seem to use the best cinematographers (in no order):

Steven Spielberg
Martin Scorsese
M. Night Shyamalan
Sam Mendes
David Fincher
Luc Besson
Pedro Almodovar
Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Paul Thomas Anderson
Baz Luhrmann
Peter Jackson (thinking about more than just LOTR)
David O Russell
Spike Jones
Mark Romanek
Michel Gondry
Anthony Minghella
Neil Jordan
Quentin Tarantino

well, damn. I prob just named nearly every major director working today!

Great thread--it's reminding me of a lot of movies I need to go back and watch again. Here are a few of my favorites that I don't think have been mentioned yet:

Night of the Hunter (Stanley Cortez)

Taxi Driver and Raging Bull (both Michael Chapman)

Battle of Algiers (Marcello Gatti)

Last Tango in Paris (Vittorio Storaro)

The Sacrifice (Sven Nykvist)

Can't say I was overly impressed with the cinematography of TAXI DRIVER, but I sure do love its score.

I love every aspect of Taxi Driver. It's the perfect film. I feel about Taxi Driver the way that Dollypop feels about Hello, Dolly! (at least I'm assuming).
