I can't believe I left out these two von Sternberg films:
Blonde Venus (the lake scene at the beginning is beautifully filmed.)
The Scarlet Empress (the look of the whole film is unbelievable)

The Aviator's cinematography was exceptional and was, I thought, the best aspect of a totally overstuffed, overrated, blah film. The cinematography soared through the movie.
Million Dollar Baby's cinematography was also excellent but much, MUCH more simple. While Million Dollar Baby is one of the greatest films I've ever seen and The Aviator is, well, not (LOL), I'd still have to say that from last year's crop of films, The Aviator definitley had the best cinematography.

The Aviator's cinematography was by Robert Richardson, who is without question the greatest living working cinematographer. His cinematography for Kill Bill is some of the best I've ever seen. The man is a legend.

Finally, someone backed me up on Touch of Evil. It was on again yesterday. I love that movie.

In my view Touch of Evil is superior to Citizen Kane. I know there are many who would disagree. You are so right about the camera angles in that film. The scenes between Marlene and Welles are superb on every level.

Posted: 7/7/05 at 10:14amI'm surprised that no one else listed THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD. Is it that no one else has seen it; or, you truly don't think it to be the masterpiece of cinematography that I do?

nmartin: I agree. Citizen Kane has a superb film language(one of the best), but I love Touch of Evil better.
I was not that impressed by the "cinematography" of The Greatest Story Ever Told (sorry), but the movie itself is brilliant.
And of course, "Chungking Express" is also interesting.

Well...actually, I liked the way the story was told in this movie. Some might say it is a slow movie...and yes it is. Yet, the words were carefully and beautifully layed out, and Max von Sydow was great...so I never thought it was too slow or boring (I saw it around 5 years ago). How did you find this movie re: other than Cinematography?
I know many scenes were great, some of them are like beatiful drawings and you can almost frame them and hang.
As I said, I was "NOT THAT" impressed...I thought Cinematography is great, but not the one for me to get excited. That is all. Not to mean to contradict what you said.

Posted: 7/7/05 at 11:13amFor me, the cinematography IS the film. It is the most beautifully photographed film, ever, IMO. I find nothng wrong with the cast, and love Claud Rains in his small role as Herod. But, for me, it's all about the images in this film.

CM2, your comment made me want to revisit this film (as I said I saw it long time ago). I should have call this piece a "film" not a "movie" by my definition (it is my thing)
. Thank you.

Posted: 7/7/05 at 1:15pmYes, Titanic's cinematography was one of the best Ive ever seen. Incredibly well filmed.

Also, American Beauty was great, the cinematography gave so much meaning to it. Here's a great example, when Lester is in his first meeting with his boss, you see him smaller and further back, then when he tells him off at the next meeting he is much closer and bigger.
Also, I know this doesn't really rank up there with the best and it may be blocking rather cinematography but in Steel Magnolias when they find out the Shelby is getting the Kidney Transplant they are all gathered around her, then they find out that M'Lynn is going to be the donor and they open their circle up and reveal M'Lynn. Anyways, I always thought that was cool.
Oh and BTW, Cabaret did win the Academy Award for Cinematography, this I am sure of. What I liked about it, is that Liza was not in center screen during the opening number. Rather than focusing on her, it treated her like an ensemble member which she was in that number. That really stands out in my mind.
