I can think of one:
"The Alamo" which was released this past April. It was a very moving character/historical piece. Loved it. Cried each of the 10 times I saw it.

Boondock Saints! Wow, I forgot about that one.
Other notables (not sure if underrated, but certainly not mainstream):
- Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels
- Private Life of Sherlock Holmes - by Billy Wilder, a real gem
- The Court Jester ("yea, verily yea")
- The Wrong Box
- Without a Clue (Michael Caine plays Sherlock Holmes, had me in stitches)
-Boondock Saints
-Liberty Heights
-The Girl Next Door (not your average teen comedy)
-City of Angels
-Casablanca
- The Hudsucker Proxy
- The Last Supper
- Blood Simple
- Dick
- Almost Famous
Memento
Insomnia (some of the finest acting by Pacino in the last 20 years)
Being John Malkovich (critically lauded...but it should have won several Oscars)
Almost Famous (I went nuts when it surprisingly won best original screenplay)
Unbreakable

Here are five that deserve to be better known:
1. Michael Hodges' "Pulp"
2. Alan Rudolph's "Remember My Name"
3. Michael Tolkin's "The Rapture"
4. Hal Hartley's "Amateur"
5. Jon Jost's "All the Vermeers in New York"
1. In The Bedroom
2. The Good Girl
3. 13 Conversations About 1 Thing
4. Moonlight Mile
5. Girl, Interrupted
How exactly does The Truman Show qualify as an underrated movie? Amazing reviews and huge box office when it opened, it was a huge event at the time. To me, I think it's overrated as I thought the film was terrible and only became interesting about 3 minutes before it ended.
Not a big Truman show fan right here. I don't see how it is underappreciated either.

Have to agree about "Thirteen Conversations About One Thing." That was an amazing movie that very few people ever saw.
I absolutely loved it. I like movies that are, how shall I say it, ...cold. 13 Conversations did that for me. It was emotionally disconnected in a way. I almost felt like I had gone to a zoo. I hope that made sense.

I'VE HEARD THE MERMAIDS SINGING, a wonderful little Canadian film about those whose vision far exceeds their talent
WAKING LIFE. Just flat out amazing to watch.
I want to see Waking Life. I should rent it.
Based on my personal experiences of people's distaste with the following...
1. Almost Famous
2. Say Anything...
3. Vanilla Sky
4. Chasing Amy
5. Baz Lurhman's (sp?) Romeo and Juliet
Me? A Cameron Crowe fan? Never.
I love your 1, 2, and 5. I still need to see your 3 and 4
I consider The Truman Show to be underrated because whenever I mention that it's one of my favorite movies, everyone around me rolls their eyes.
I don't understand why Girl, Interrupted is underrated. It's my 5th favorite movie. Angelina won an Oscar, and the critics loved it.
