Torpedo of Truth an Unmitigated Bomb

Well, tomorrow night he's in Chicago and two nights later in Cleveland. We'll see if he gets as far as Cleveland.

LiveNation must be crapping right now. A lot of media were in Detroit and saw it all. Jeff Rossen of the TODAY Show, someone from USA Today, the Hollywood Reporter, and EW.com were all there live tweeting.

It could play all of it's dates - people will go just to say they were there. We all know that and the Charlie Crazy Train is fairly popular right now. Another thing the masses love is crazy

The impression I got from those who were there wasn't just that it was a bad show but that it wasn't really even an organized show. It was like he quit on anything he had prepped and tried to BS his way through. The audience wasn't just put out by a bad show but quite a few were *pissed*. The local press talked to people who had traveled from NY, CT, IN, Ontario, all over, and some paid top dollar.

Has he ever done life stage work before (other than Saturday Night Live type stuff) more or less tried to write a show?

(Remember, Detroit's a metro that's put up with 50 years of the perennially bad Detroit Lions, so how bad was Sheen's show that he got booed off stage?)

Barnum was right.

Anyone who paid good money to see this guy should have their head examined. Good luck trying to get a refund if he cancels shows. I read today that before a refund is issued for him not showing up or being sodrugged up he cannot perform, he has up to one year to reschedule before a refund is issued. I am not sure if that just for NY tickets or tickets in general.

If you bought tickets you deserve to get burned.

News this morning is that he changed the format of the show completely and was a huge hit in Chicago. I was at the Goodman seeing El Nogalar.

Last night in Chicago was a big hit- no boos, no walkouts. Charlie mostly sat and answered questions posed by a DJ that works for Live nation who kept him focused and cut him off if he went too far afield. It was flat out repulsive to see the women lined up to go cheer for this serial abuser.

From writer Daniel Little:

“False consciousness” is a concept derived from Marxist theory of social class. The concept refers to the systematic misrepresentation of dominant social relations in the consciousness of subordinate classes. Marx himself did not use the phrase “false consciousness,” but he paid extensive attention to the related concepts of ideology and commodity fetishism. Members of a subordinate class (workers, peasants, serfs) suffer from false consciousness in that their mental representations of the social relations around them systematically conceal or obscure the realities of subordination, exploitation, and domination those relations embody. Related concepts include mystification, ideology, and fetishism.

Just add "women" to the list of subordinate classes and you can see why it happens.

Namo - I had not heard about the Marxist theory of false consciousness, but it explains a lot. And hits a little too close to home. But boy, is it enlightening.

My sisters in second wave feminism used it to explain how female heavy metal fans could sing along in concert with Axl Rose as he sang, "I used to love her but I had to kill her..."

It works with the Charlie Sheen phenomenon too. Especially if your Roses and Sheens can make specific women the object of their scorn, then the fans can hate those "bitches" for "being a bitch" too.

I guess it's similar to the women and gay men who are inexplicably fans of Eminem.

I'm surprised Sheen managed to turn it around so much in one day to get such disparate audience reactions. I don't understand the allure of going to see him in either format, though.

The guy on stage posing as an interviewer and tasked with keeping Sheen focused isn't just some DJ working for Live Nation. It's Joey Scoleri, Live Nation's Senior VP of Tour Marketing & Promotion.

Live Nation must have been crapping their pants after the Detroit show and decided to exert a little more influence.

(one of the media members snapped and posted a photo of a glassine of coke on the ground near the tour bus in Chicago and another journo confirmed seeing it, too)

You cannot be suggesting Sheen was taking an illegal substance. Really now.

I agree. Theatre demands a more creative cover for track marks.
