even the staged video of bush kissing and hugging people was not terribly convincing...

Because he has no capacity for empathy.

This is the man who made fun of the woman's death row religious conversion right before he signed off on her execution.

This is the man who laughed when he made the refernce to "the haves" and "the have-mores, otherwise known as 'my base,' heh heh heh."

what was convincing was bush standing around awkwardly while rescuers hustled around, volunteers provided comfort, food and water, and victims milled around looking shell-shocked.

surely, the powers that be could have staged a better video than this to send out to the media.

I think that the reason it's not working this time is that his handlers simply cannot control so many variables in such an anarchic situation. They've been so used to controlling everything with their hand-picked audiences sequestered in studios, get him out in the real world and he just twists in the wind.

i'm sure their production quality will have improved considerably for primetime viewing. right now, think of it as more of a dress rehearsal where the actors don't know their parts, blocking or lines. or even what play they're doing.

Upon receiving news that our fearless leader will not even touch down in New Orleans but will rather be surveying the damage from the biggest disaster in world history from his plane, I would like to make a list of grievances for President George W. Bush:

1. We have a third-world country in our homeland right now. They have now being going for five days without basic supplies - food, water, bathroom facilities, diapers, medicine, etc. They are assaulting each other and raping each other and stealing supplies from each other at gunpoint out of frustration and insanity. The streets smell like human waste and dead bodies and dirty water. You, President Bush, have done absolutely nothing about this. You cut your precious vacation short by two days (and not before Katrina hit even though everyone had advanced warning that the bitch was coming) but you have not gotten supplies to the people. You have not gotten the National Guard in there until this morning. And now you will not even be surveying the damage from up close. You'll be in your freaking Air Force One with your cocktails and your laptop and your filet mignon. F*** that. These people haven't had water to drink in five days. Get off the damn plane and at least give them a morale-boosting speech. I'm sure you're afraid that they'd fire gunshots at you and, at the very least boo you, when you attempt to say that "a swift and tidy recovery effort is on the way" but, hey, you're the who turned down foreign aid, so if they kick you in the balls, I'm saying you deserve it.

2. Of course, more of the underprivileged people (you know, those not helped by your tax cuts) would have been helped out of New Orleans by the US Armed Forces had they not already been tied up fighting this fake war over in Iraq. It's not like we didn't know Katrina was coming. It's not like we haven't know for years how impoverished parts of New Orleans and Biloxi are. It's not like people there haven't reported the chances of the levees breaking before. Of course, if a report doesn't have the word "terrorist" in it, you don't even read it anymore, do you?

3. The gas prices are now over $6 a gallon in Georgia. I think your ties to oil have been well-documented so that's all I'm going to say on that. I hope people starting walking, using public transportation, or riding their bikes.

4. On a fairly unrelated matter but, while I still have your attention, you have told some of my very best friends in life that the love they feel for another individual is sick and wrong and should not be recognized by the world. With people killing each other on the streets of New Orleans over supplies, with people flying planes into buildings, with people planting bombs on London subways, with people preying on innocent children, you would think that the one thing this world needs right now is a little love. You haven't shown any love and compassion for the people of New Orleans. I don't think that our current conditions in this world enable us to turn down or scoff at love found in any form.

5. F*** you, President Bush. It is painfully obvious that you are the worst president this country has ever had and I hope that after not paying any attention to a group of people who actually quite foolishly voted for you, that more people start calling for your impeachment. Bill Clinton was impeached and he just got a little head the oval office. For someone as religious as you are, I hope you understand that there's a f****** special place in hell with your name on it.

THE JIG IS UP.

Namo, your comment reminded me of this E.L. Doctorow essay, written about a year ago today. I hung it on my dorm door all year.

Now you've gone and exposed my real identity for all the board to see.

Any chance of a "Ragtime" revival anytime soon?
