Very Very limited release though. I know the film did not have a big budget or anything, but if this was a wider release it could REALLY do well I think. American Carol is also released today, with a wider release. Curious to see how this does. If it bombs its the liberals fault.
I like his show and some of his humor, but with this I dunno. He is a bit of a hypocrite when it comes to religion.
The Onion gave it a D+. Apparently, its very ad hominem.
"He is a bit of a hypocrite when it comes to religion."
how?
Pippin, I don't want to start a religious war on this board but he has a problem when it comes to church and state. He claims to be against mixing the two but supports religious theocracies in the world.
He does this and then goes on to insult people of faith. It just doesn't jive with me and many others.
Just came back from seeing it and it's a BRILLIANT movie. Maher lets the people he talks to make asses of themselves. He doesn't even need to be there with the punchlines. Granted, I'm not at all religious myself and question most of what a scary number of people take on faith, but in my book he was right on. His closing remark in the film about how the proper stance is one of doubt and not complete subjugation to what is being preached is an incredibly strong statement - one which the movie proves is one that those who SHOULD take that stance the most are the ones who will most firmly stand against it.
Bill Had a good weekend. Check it out.

Thanks for the comments jasonf. I was hoping to get to see it this weekend but never got there.
Decided to see this tonight instead of watching the debate. Really enjoyed it. Not much I didn't know already. But it was entertainingly put together. You get to see religious fanatics at their entertaining and scary worst.
When we left, my partner said the film should be mandatory viewing in every college. I told him I thought High School would be better, because it looked like most of the nuts on screen never made it to college.

I really liked it as well. I didn't think it was nearly as one-sided as I feared it would be. Maher lets all the religions talk and never really makes fun of anyone in a threatening way.
I did think that Islam came off kind of badly though.
Last week Bill O'Reilly and some other right wingers were gloating that An American Carol beat out Bill Maher's 'Religulous'. Carol came in at number 9 and 'Religulous'came in at 10. WHat the liars refused to tell you was Carol opened on about 1,000 more screens than 'Religulous' and cost way more.
Well, this week 'Religulous' beat American Carol AGAIN.

Gee, wonder out of the two films which film will do better over seas.
The really disturbing part is that Beverly Hills Chihuahua is number one...
Dying to see it!
Maher's film had a better week, and now has a higher total gross.

I saw it last night and enjoyed it very much. I think I'm going to have to plan a trip to the Jesus Amusement Park sometime in the near future!

I finally got to see this last night. A criticism I had heard is that he went after the 'crazies' to represent the religious viewpoint. After watching, I wonder what different perspective would have been achieved otherwise. They simply expressed the outrageous positions taken and proliferated by those 'in charge'.
There were two segments that I literally had to take a break from because they were making me sick:
During the re-enactment of the crucifixion of Jesus at the theme park, watching the audience members applaud every time he fell and was beaten by the Roman guard. I mean, seriously?
And then there was the whole interview with Arkansas senator Mark Pryor - a US senator, for goodness sake! That segment actually terrified me.
In the end, I was simply grateful to hear SOMEONE with a public forum saying out loud some of the things that I think about pretty much daily - best summed up in his closing statement: "The choice is simple - grow up or die."

Just watched it again.
And again, the last line made me cheer.
"Grow up or die."
Great film!
