Because the ANTA Washington Square Theatre Had No Orchestra Pit--so they were FORCED to put the Orchestra on stage--and decided to put 1/2 on each side--to achieve a somewhat "sterophonic effect".
BTW, what are we trying to prove here?

The correct answer is NOT The ANTA.
It was because the Goodspeed Opera House had no orchestra pit that the orchestra was put in the side boxes. This was then repeated when the show opend in The ANTA, and subsequently on Broadway.
As you may recall from earlier in the thread, MOLM originated at The Goodspeed Opera House.
