Trivial Pursuit #118

The late "teens" and early 1920s of were filled with musicals that told a "Cinderella" story--poor women who married wealthy men and/or enjoyed huge success in Show Business.

The musical that started this trend was produced in 1919. It was also the FIRST Broadway musical to run for more than 500 performances in its original run AND run for more than 500 performances when it was revived.

What musical am I referring to?

GOOD LUCK, Everybody!!! Trivial Pursuit #118

re: Trivial Pursuit #118

wildcat! YES, you are 100% CORRECT!!!

IRENE--first presented in 1919 was the first of those "Cinderella" musicals I am referring to it. It was a HUGE hit when first presented in 1919 and was a big hit ALL OVER AGIAN when it was revived with Debbie Reynolds in 1973.

WAY--TO--GO, wildcat! re: Trivial Pursuit #118

Now for your bonus points:

What was the hit song that emerged from IRENE--why, it even spoke about a President's daughter favorite color?
"I say YOU'RE the CUTEST one. No, I say YOU'RE the CUTEST One. And we go on like that from dawn to three."

re: Trivial Pursuit #118

... I guess wildcat had to step out...

So I throw the Bonus Points Question Up To The Entire Board...

What was the hit song that emerged from IRENE (it even mentioned the favorite color of a President's Daughter?)
"I say YOU'RE the CUTEST one. No, I say YOU'RE the CUTEST One. And we go on like that from dawn to three."

re: Trivial Pursuit #118

Hint #1: She spent some time in Wonderland; and also went through a Looking-Glass.
"I say YOU'RE the CUTEST one. No, I say YOU'RE the CUTEST One. And we go on like that from dawn to three."

re: Trivial Pursuit #118

I guess that would be Alice Blue Gown - I will answer for my twin brother. He can still have the points if I am correct.

re: Trivial Pursuit #118

RATH!!!

You are Correct!

YES, IRENE was the musical that introduced us to the song "Alice Blue Gown" ("Alice Blue" was the favorite color of Teddy Roosevelt's daughter Alice--and this particular shade of Blue was named in her honor).

Well, it looks like I have TWO prize winners today:

Its cool, Rath, re: Trivial Pursuit #118--I think you are deserving of a prize as well!!

Okay, so now both wildcat and Rath are poor shopgirls! However--you're about to meet wealthy Donald Mashall--of the Long Island Marshalls! You'll meet and fall in love and want to marry--but the ironic twist is that YOUR Mother--NOT the wealthy Marshall family--objects to the union!!! re: Trivial Pursuit #118

re: Trivial Pursuit #118

"Alice Blue Gown":

I once had a gown, it was almost new
Oh, the daintiest thing, it was sweet Alice blue

With little forget-me-nots placed here and there
When I had it on, oh, I walked on the air!

And it wore, and it wore, and it wore
'Til it went, and it wasn't no more

In my sweet little Alice blue gown
When I first wandered down into town

I was so proud inside
As I felt every eye
And in every shop window I primped, passing by

A new manner of fashion I'd found
And the world seemed to smile all around

'Til it wilted, I wore it
I'll always adore it
My sweet little Alice blue gown!

The little silk worms that made silk for that gown
Just made that much silk and then crawled in the ground

'Cause there never was anything like it before
And I don't care to hope there will be any more!

And it's gone, 'cause it just had to be
Still it wears in my memory

In my sweet little Alice blue gown
When I first wandered down into town

I was so proud inside
As I felt every eye
And in every shop window I primped, passing by

A new manner of fashion I'd found
And the world seemed to smile all around

So it wouldn't be proper
If made of silk were another
My sweet little Alice blue gown!

re: Trivial Pursuit #118

Okay, Rath.

How about THIS for a prize?

I grant you "Carrie Fisher"--after all, her Mother, Debbie Reynolds, starred in the 1973 Revival of IRENE...

re: Trivial Pursuit #118

I'll always remember Carrie Fisher's 8th Birthday party-- after she served the cake, Debbie Reynolds flashed the party guests. Carrie ran off to her room crying.

"It twirled up!"

re: Trivial Pursuit #118

I was at that party! They didn't have any Pepsi but there was lots of coke...

re: Trivial Pursuit #118

Note of Trivia:

Debbie Reynolds broke her ankle during the Boston tryout of IRENE.

So patrons couldn't demand their money back because Reynolds wasn't in the show, they directed her to sit in a chair just slightly off-stage and recite her lines while her understudy sang and danced all her musical numbers.

re: Trivial Pursuit #118

Carrie Fisher was also briefly in the chorus of IRENE when her mother was playing the lead. That's what i'd like to see---Carrie Fisher as a chorus girl. Or better yet, be backstage for the caustic remarks she'd no doubt supply.

Love me some Carrie Fisher.
Will: They don't give out awards for helping people be gay... unless you count the Tonys. "I guarantee that we'll have tough times. I guarantee that at some point one or both of us will want to get out. But I also guarantee that if I don't ask you to be mine, I'll regret it for the rest of my life..."
#23

re: Trivial Pursuit #118

I think Fisher being in the chorus of IRENE is interesting when compared to ANOTHER Revival of a hit show from that era--NO, NO, NANETTE.

In NANETTE, Producer Cyma Rubin's daughter Loni Zoe Ackerman had a featured role as a scheming flapper--and 99.99% of those involved with the production thought she was miscast. (Please consult Donald Dunn's The Making of No, No, Nanette).

re: Trivial Pursuit #118

And don't forget the night during the Canada tryout when Debbie lost her voice and John Gielgud, who was still directing the show, stood side stage and read her lines in his sonorous voice.

And the comment (immortalised as a chapter heading in Ethan Mordden's "The Happiest Corpse I've Ever Seen") when Debbie took a curtain call to tepid applause...

"I don't have to be here, you know. I could be home in Beverley Hills with my FIVE MAIDS!!!!"
