re: Trivial Pursuit #118

my favorite anecdote about The Immortal Debbie is when she was going to do a GYPSY revival in Los Angeles. Gower Champion was to be the director/choreographer. Supposedly at the table read for the new project, La Deb performed brilliantly, but wanted to discuss one factor afterward, and one factor only: the ending.

She wanted a new song, because (paraphrase) "the audience needs to leave the theatre loving me. They are not going to buy me having a nervous breakdown. That's not Debbie."

Perhaps she was better off sticking to IRENE, MOLLY BROWN LIVE, etcetera. After all, she closed WOMAN OF THE YEAR in two weeks, after Raquie Welch kept it going a respectable amount of time when Betty Bacall left it.

i thought she might have come round about her image, given the wonderful MOTHER film she made with Albert Brooks and her stint as John Goodman's emotionally troubled mother on ROSEANNE. Yet her schtick as Grace's mom is vintage "lovable scamp." Recent casting rumors suggest she is only willing to stretch so far, despite the skills, really, to play anything she set her mind to. She turned down the HAROLD AND MAUDE musical, and has recently been rumored to be considering a tour of NUNSENSE as Mother Superior.

Oh, that Debbie. Carrie will get another book and movie out of her maternal material yet!

When Reynolds did ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (again, I believe, Directed by Champion) they had to re-work the entire show per her specifications.

Champion threw in a ballet based on "There's No Business Like Show Business" and cut some songs as well.

I guess the magnificent score by Irving Berlin and the outstanding original Direction by Josh Logan wasn't good enough for her...

sure, ETHEL, it was "good"...but it "just wasn't Debbie." No doubt the Mother Superior on the proposed new tour will no longer get high on poppers. Her fans would never accept that. Neither one of them.

don't worry, RATH, i count myself proudly as one of Debbie's two surviving fans. i just think she overestimates the world's devotion to her image.

I saw Debbie again in "The Gazebo" the other night. It was a terrific, elegant performance. I'd forgotten how good she could be.

the "lady" in question can act. You just need a director with a whip and a chair.

... And you're taking it out on our "Poor Debbie?"

Did you know that when Eddie Fisher left her for Liz in 1961, LIFE Magazine did a WHOLE SPREAD on her--complete with her clutching the three little kids Fisher had dumped for that HARRIDAN Liz Taylor?

In 1961, America just about CANNONIZED her...
