Don't worry, folks, I haven't forgotten.
I have to teach a class this morning, so we'll play as soon as I get back. :)

Well as long as this is here:
Mary Martin had something during her Broadway career that Ethel Merman never had. What?
And #2:
(This is way easier), what shows did Mary take on the road that the Merm opened in?
This ought to fill in the time until class is over.

An understudy that actually got to go on for her.

Annie Get Your Gun -yep, that's it. They also shared Dolly but neither originated it. Some natural blonde did.
What's the first answer?

At the end of COMPANY, leading character Robert finally comes to terms with what relationships are REALLY about and sings "Being Alive."
That song was NOT the original choice for that spot in show. What was the name of the song that Harold Prince and Stephen Sondheim replaced with "Being Alive"?

I actually sang HAPPILY EVER AFTER in college.

The way I remember it was:
1) "Marry Me a Little" was written during rehearsals and then dumpd for -
2) "Happily Ever After" which was dumped in Boston for -
3) "Being Alive"

and to tie it all up
Mary Martin had a bona fide flop (Jennie in 1963). Merman had only hits.
Happily ever after in hell. I'd call that a mixed message.

"Merman Had Only Hits"
Obviously, I love Ethel, but she had a flop as well--STARS IN YOUR EYES which lasted all of four months in 1939 and produced NO hit songs.
It was a spoof of Hollywood. Merm played a movie star.
