Believe it or not, CHICAGO was not the first musical to present a courtroom as a circus.

That distinction belongs to a musical that premeried on Broadway in 1941.

What musical am I thinking of?

RENT, it IS Indeed LADY IN THE DARK!

YES, that Kurt Weill musical about a lady who goes into psychoanalysis had a courtroom scene in a circus-like setting THIRTY years before CHICAGO!!!

CONGRATULATIONS, Rent, I'm pleased to see you know the classics as well!

which Broadway featured actor, before going on Hollywood stardom, made a big splash with a tongue twister patter song in LADY IN THE DARK?

and Wildcat, Magruder, and M_E are only allowed to PM their responses. The rest of youse, on the honor system, try to figure it out without using IBDB. It's just more fun that way.

Hint: he married another slightly famous woman named Sylvia Fine, who went by his last name the rest of her life.

LOL - no, TxTwoStep, I didn't use a reference source!

Hope this isn't considered threadjacking (if it is, I apologize), but which recording of "Lady in the Dark" would you guys recommend? I know the Maria Freidman recording is supposed to be the most complete, but I gotta say (and I know I might be in the minority, here), her voice does nothing for me. Any others?

I'm with you on Friedman, NCGuy.

I would advise you to look into the 1963 Studio Cast CD with Rise Stevens... and Danny Kaye is on it as well!

(BTW, you did NOT Threadjack--the Trivial Pursuit Threads are OPEN to EVERYONE)...

Thanks, Mary_Ethel! I may give the Rise Stevens a try. I just finished a biography of Weill, and have been anxious to get some more of his music. I have the off-B'way "Threepenny Opera" and the Lotte Lenya "American Theater Songs" CD, but not much else at this point.

NCGuy, you might also listen to the original Liza, Gertrude Lawrence. She made several recordings of individual songs from LADY, as well as a radio version of the musical with MacDonald Carey. All are available on CD.

Duh.

Julie Andrews--recreating Gertrude Lawrence's performance in the original cast of LADY IN THE DARK in the film STAR!--which I believed, had all the opulence and different camera angles of a Busby Berkeley Number--a QUITE different effect than the orginal staging, I'm sure.

I believe Andrews' rendention of "The Saga of Jenny" was the climax of STAR!--based on Gertie Lawrence's autobiography--"Gertrude Lawrence as Mrs. A."
