I'd watch it. It's not a typical Coens movie but it's a very good Western. The movie felt a little slow for me towards the end, but the shots are beautiful and it has some great Coen brothers dialogue.
Hailee Steinfeld gives what I thought was a brilliant, star-making performance as Mattie Ross. I'm not a fan of Jeff Bridges and this movie didn't change my mind, but I imagine for people who like him, this will be a very enjoyable performance, it's a showy role and he is able to embody the character. Matt Damon is great as usual, though he is gone for long parts of the movie at times, he has really great chemistry with Bridges and Steinfeld though.
I recommend it if you enjoy Westerns, it's a very good one and most people say it's better than the original film (haven't seen it so can't say).

The original was on TCM recently. Frankly, I think The Duke having that be his Oscar-winning role was pure Academy politics. Duke was Duke but it should not at the top of the list for your John Wayne fix (considering TCM had a marathon of his films that day there were much better performances on display), much less for fans of Westerns. Reading the reviews the Coen Brothers seem to shift the focus from Rooster Cogburn to Mattie Ross (allegedly this was in the original novel) which I find intriguing. I really do hope Hailee Steinfeld is as good as advertised, being better than Kim Darby in the original is automatic brownie points.

I actually am interested in Matt Damon's role. I have been left cold by a couple of his more recent films and I have a hard time imagining him as a US Marshal in the Wild West.

Personally, I think The Quiet Man is the "end all" for Wayne films though any of the films he made with O'Hara are great as well.

I've never seen the original, but I decided to see it because of my love for the Coen Brothers and the cast, particularly Josh Brolin. I found it very entertaining.

I saw it this afternoon, and it greatly exceeded my expectations. The cinematography was remarkable, as was Hailee Steinfeld.

Just got back from seeing it. I'm not into westerns but I did like this movie. Agree with what the others have said so far. Wow- what a break for Hailee Steinfeld- she pretty much carried the movie. I do like Jeff Bridges and he was wonderful- as well as the rest of the cast. My son is a huge Coen bothers fan and this was much better than The Human Centipede-lol!

Saw it this afternoon and really liked as madbrian noted, the cinematography is amazing and the performances are all very good.
This version is supposedly more faithful to the Portis novel than the original.

Hailee was REMARKABLE! Loved loved loved this film. And I HATE Westerns. I went in with the lowest of expectations. I didn't think I would like it. But the charm won me over quick!

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I agree my favorite John Wayne movie is the Quiet Man

My father loved Quiet Man so much that I was supposed to be named Mary Kate. But my cousin was born first and she got the name
