GG - many times, the wave doesn't actually rise til it nears the coast.

Nice Republican avatar Rath.
I see it as a pic of someone whose singing and performing I've enjoyed over the years, but you are free to see what you want to see.

That's because every thread SHOULD be about IDINAAAAAA!!!!!!

Strangely, there's no mention of this on the New Zealand Herald site, which purports to be the main news and information page for NZ. Even though it's very early in the morning there, I would think this would be posted.

That is very odd and a bit frightening, DG.

It had not been updated for 20 minutes, so perhaps it just hadn't posted yet. This doesn't seem like something they'd want to take their time with!

I could see how Keith Richard falling out of a tree in Fiji could
cause such havoc !
If they're bracing themselves for something that, hopefully will not happen, would they really have time to update a website?
Edit: Missed your other post, DG!

Girly - I would assume, though, that the net would be a part of their emergency broadcast system. Anyway, it updates every 20 minutes, and is there now.
It's been a little over 2 hours since the quake - I wonder how long they think the threat could last?
7 online only mentioned possible strike times, but nothing about when the threat could be over.

I've been to both places , I hope nothing happens.
Last I heard they were expecting it to hit (if it does) in like 90 minutes. Could that be true?

Swells can have widely varient travel velocities. And there's always the chance that one didn't even form - it all depends on what type of movement of the plates occurred. The Indonesian quake was one plate slipping under another, which forced it up rapidly, thereby causing the wave. But if the quake was side to side movement, it's likely that no swell would form. I don't know the timetable for determining that factor, though.
What are the odds of it being much larger than they expect and covering a wider area?

Don't think it's possible to know, Rath.
Everyone is SLEEPING there now...how would they know to evacuate? Air raid sirens???

In coastal regions, they may have something like that in place.
It feels odd to be concerned about people who are sound asleep and completely oblivious to the potential danger.
I just heard on TV that it was cancelled.
