By power I mean a recognized job (that doesn't sound right either and its almost midnight so my brain isn't really working).
If this happens she'll be a step away from the presidency and that is much closer (aka much more "powerful") than any African-American woman, or any woman or minority has ever been.
I think it came out right that time.
Before you get too excited, jacob--this is just one of the many rumors floating around Washington this week.
The point is more that something as heretofore unthinkable--a black woman being a heartbeat from the presidency--is suddenly discussable.
When the indictments, are handed down, there will be chaos in the US government unlike anything this nation has ever known. And it will all be the fault of George Bush, the lieutenants he surrounded himself with, and the people who allowed him to be declared president not once but twice.

PJ- I'm not getting excited because I highly doubt it will happen.

Jacob, son, do not be ashamed of being optimistic!
If there are no indictments then the people of my generation will have even more horrible things to tell our children about this current administration.
Where I am from (a highly Republican section of PA) there are almost no conservative teenagers. This tells me that the President is not going to be treated very well in the history books.

Conspiracy, perjury, false statements, that will be the incictments.
It is called TREASON!!!

No, that is not treason.
brdlwyr- How is leaking the name of a CIA agent NOT treason?
Pinguin--
In addition to possible charges directly involving the revelation of Valerie Wilson's identity under the 1982 Intelligence Identities Protection Act (IIPA), Fitzgerald is looking at other possible crimes, including related perjury or conspiracy charges, lying to the FBI and the grand jury and the 1917 Espionage Act.
Anyone who transmitted classified material or information to persons who were not cleared to receive it could be charged with a felony under the 1917 act, which is easier to prove than the 1982 act and carries very stiff penalties.
Treason is harder to prove than the 1982 act--the Constitution defines treason as "levying war against the United States" or "adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort." It also requires the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act or a confession in open court for conviction.

Am I dreaming? But knowing condi's political standings i cant say it'd be much better; however, better than cheney! is it wrong to hate him, no i dont think so!
ZONEACE:
The VP does count the electoral ballots in January in an election year!! AND they preside over the senate.... so you right not a lot of power, but thats got to be one kick ass job!
~~EM~~
If Cheney resigned, Rice's accesion into the VP position will not be guaranteed. Rice will be appointed by Bush to the VP. Rice then have to be confirmed by the Senate. The first person to be appointed into the VP position was Gerald Ford. The second person was Ford's VP Rockefeller. This is all to comply with the 25th Amendment.

this is CRAZY! So surreal. I hate bush. Someone one should _____ him. Someone fill that in.
This makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
If he stepped down and she was not put in the position, there would be a HUGE issue from a race standpoint and a sex standpoint. Honestly, and I really don't want to sound like a southern racist, but the idea of a a president & vice-president of two different races always worried me. I have always been afraid that horrid extremists on one side or the other would try to assassinate the president in order to get the vice in office, or assassinate the vice just to make sure it could never happen. Damn, i think I am a bit of a pessimist. I just don't trust some of my fellow citizens.

First of all, the president is under NO obligation to appoint Rice as VP-- the line of sucession only applies to emergency powers: i.e. in the event of the death of both the Pres and VP, the Speaker of the House takes office. The President would be free to nominate any one he pleased if Cheney resigned. The only requirement would be that he or she would be US born, 35 and capable of assuming the office of President if needed.
Second, if Rice got the nod it would be the greatest testimony yet to Bush's need for blind loyalty: Rice was a total failure as US Security Advisor, but because of her willingness to shield Bush in front of the 9/11 comission, she got the promotion to Secretary of State. She's had no accomplishments or successes as SoS and here she is being floated as possible VP. Amazing. Truly the only thing Bush values is doglike devotion.
Well, hel-Lo JOE!
Got your Champagne chilling? Or will you be celebrating with something harder?
Joe, anyone Bush appoints will be a total lapdog (or Neo-conservative of which Bush himself is a lapdog) Condi at least makes it interesting because it would be a historic occurence.
JerseyGirl, I believe that those concerns are the main reason we need an African American in the position as soon as possible. The "doomsday" mentality is used by far to many as an excuse for refusing qualified people the job. (The same holds true from a gender standpoint.) It is highly unlikely that a racial assassination would happen, there are many on either side that may want it but "qualified" people should not be rejected out of fear. (Not the Condi is qualified, just the future people who may actually have qualifications, but would still be rejected in the world view you express.)
I'LL be celebrating with something harder for sure!
I am not saying that she or anyone else should be rejected becuase of those fears. It just scares me.
I don't think she is the right person, but I would love to see it happen for historical purpose alone. Then she would run for the president's seat in 2008. Hillary could run against her! We could paint the white house PINK! Okay, so that's overboard...
Of course, she's the wrong person. BUSH is the wrong person. They're ALL the wrong people.
TWO Cheney aides have now turned on Cheney and implicated him in the crimes: John Hannah and David Wurmser.
"Wurmser, Cheney’s Middle East advisor and an assistant to then-Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs John Bolton, likely cooperated because he faced criminal charges for his role in leaking Wilson's name on the orders of higher-ups, the sources said."

Maybe they could appoint a neutral independent? Geena Davis, say.

Excellent idea. Stockard Channing could be her wife!
