I have a problem with this. They are celebrating their men who fought FOR the Nazis. Frankly the Ukraine has never been on my list of places to visit, their anti-gay rhetoric alone would stop me, but this? This is madness.
Thoughts?

Much of the Russian-speaking east of the country celebrates the Red Army's victory over Nazi invaders, while in the Ukrainian-speaking west, where most of the anti-Soviet insurgents fought, monuments have been erected and streets have been named in their honor.

Sounds not unlike the regions of the South that celebrate the Confederate Army from the Civil War.

It sounds to me like what they do in thee South for the Civil War soldiers. they celebrate the soldiers, not the war. sort of how people on this very messageboard who were against the Iraq war but claimed they were for the soldiers

very true Matt and Sue. I just have a real problem with anything with a swastika on it....then again, the confederate flag does the same to me.

i can understand that Elphaba, do you live in the South? I have a good friend who is from Alabama who calls the civil war. "The War of Northern Aggression" and claims thats how they refer to it in school. its all perspective

No Sue....my Army time in the South was enough to make me stay far away from there....the entire South calls the Civil War the war of northern aggression, and have never accepted that they were in any way, shape, or form responsible for it....no, I stay away from the South

Sue, I agree with you on the first part - it is very similar to the South's reverence for the Confederacy. But I don't think either is a celebration of the soldiers rather than their cause. And I do think support for our Iraq soldiers can exist apart from support for the cause of that horrible war. I believe those of us who hate what the U.S. did in Iraq can still support our soldiers; in fact I see no inconsistency in supporting our troops and believing they shouldn't go and die or be maimed in an unjust war (just the opposite, supporting our troops is demanding that their deployment be only for just causes), a position that I share with many members of our forces.

Because I believe that some in the Ukraine's adulation of its Nazi past, and some in the South's commemoration of 19th Century slave holding and defense of the Confederacy are revolting, I can't agree with your conclusion that this is a phony outrage.

to clarify Henrik, the phony outrage i was talking about was that the ukraines were celebrating nazis. Nazis are hated in former Soviet Union even more then here As i know you know, the Nazi killed MILLIONS and MILLIONS of our people. of course as with any war, there are always traitors, but the vast majority of people are not

the South celebrates that war, that time in history that they perceive to be their golden time, with their plantations, slaves, their mint juleps, and their "genteel" way of life.

The South has never been the same since that time, and they shall never rise again.....as if they were ever "risen" in the first place.

The only thing the South ever produced that is worth anything is cheesy eggs from Waffle House, and I can drive 5 hrs to Scottsdale, AZ for that.

Sue, I'm well aware what the Nazis did to the Soviet Union and its people, the sorrowful destruction visited on that nation and how most of those in the former Soviet Union recall those tragedies. But I'm not convinced that this article's account of pro-Nazi Ukrainian nationalists doesn't present another side of that. Certainly, there are real fascists with Nazi sympathies in the countries which were formerly Soviet, just as there are real fascists with Nazi sympathies in the U.S. and elsewhere and just as there are real White supremacists nostalgic for the Old South in the American South and elsewhere in this country.
