University of Pennsylvania or Drexel University

I'm going on an East Coast College Tour with my school, and one of the days we can choose between either University of Pennsylvania or Drexel University. I was researching both to see which had the most complete theatre program (if any), and I came up empty.

Which one would be better for a theatre education?

Well Drexel is more of a technological school. One of my friends is studying music engineering and business. U of Penn is an academic school - not sure if they have a theatre program. You might want to check out University of the Arts in Philadelphia. They have a Musical Theatre undergrad program.

I would like to major in theatre (preferably Musical Theatre, but neither of these schools have that). I just need to decide which school to visit. It sounds like neither of them are for me...which one is prettier to look at so I won't waste a day?

They are so close, you can see them both in a day. Drexel is two blocks away from Penn. Penn is older and prettier, assuming you like ivy. I don't know about their theater program but I can tell you that being a Penn alum connects you with very influential people. And the campus is interesting, vibrant...always something going on...and very close to the center of town. Philadelphia is a great theater city, too.

Good luck!

If you are going to look in Philly for a theater school you need to look at Uarts. It has a musical theater program, its right in the middle of Philadelphia surrounded by dozens of theaters, and all of the professors are working professionals. Drexel is known mostly for it engineering and while UPenn has amazing business, pre-med, and nursing is not the place to study theater in Philly.

If you want to stay in Philly, you could look into Temple University. They have a BA Theatre program along with a well-respected MFA program. Their BA has concentrations in Acting, Design and for Fall 2007 they are implementing a Musical Theatre concentration. The BA is non-audition, but I believe the Musical Theatre concentration you have to audition.

You kinda get the best of both worlds, a good theatre program along with a liberal arts education. Granted it's no Penn or Drexel but in terms of academics it is better than UArts. Plus f you could get into Penn/Drexel, you may even get a full ride at Temple! Plus I believe Temple has an actual campus while UArts' campus is comprised of buildings along Broad Street.

Well, UPenn is an Ivy League school. Drexel is more geared towards technology and medicine and what-not.

And yes, Temple U has a great theater department and is introducing a Muscial Theater concentration this coming fall. And yes, there's an actual campus.

Yeah I accidently put Fall 2007...I meant 2008. I'm looking into Temple as a backup myself if other schools don't work out for me.
