What made The Birds so great was the damaged family element. that's about 75% of the movie. The widow grasping relentlessly to her grown son. The intruding other woman, who bears a freakily similar appearance to the mother. The ex girlfriend consigned to being a spinster shoolteacher.
You just know that none of that's going to transfer to a global warming tract.
And there's not even much screen time when the birds are actually attacking in the original. It's more about the anticipation than the real attacks.
USA did a made for TV remake a couple of years ago that completely sucked.

- The classic British crime drama The Long Good Friday is getting remade. In Miami. By the dude who directed Resident Evil.
- ...Just as soon as he gets done remaking Death Race 2000.
- Taps is getting remade, too...
- ...As is Claude Chabrol’s 1987 film The Cry of the Owl.
- More St. Trinian’s films are on the way. Starring Mischa Barton.
- And, oh yeah, it’s about time for some new Fu Manchu flicks, too.
- Okay, here’s one non-remake: Elijah Wood is going to play Iggy Pop, in a biopic of the rock wildman. Why couldn’t Iggy Pop just play Iggy Pop? C’mon, he was great in Cry Baby.

GoSmile touches on some of the elements of THE BIRDS that explain WHY the birds attack.
They attack for a very good reason--granted, alot of this I heard from Hitch himself in the Schickel documentary--but he says that birds have been attacked for centuries, hunted for food and sport and they finally rebel. If you notice that before each of the attacks, someone does something to harm a bird; for example, when they're in the restaurant before the birtds attack and cause the car explosion, you hear the waitress put an order in for chicken dinners...Melanie delivers the caged love birds to Rod Taylor under false circumstances, and when the bird attacks her in the boat, she doesn't heed the warning and proceeds to interfere with Taylor and the his relationships with all the women in his life.

Instead of remaking the movie Barbarella, they should bring the German musical to Broadway.
Also if they do remake it, and Lindsay Lohan has the title role; I'm gonna puke.

The Birds is my favorite screenplay to any motion picture. Even without any scenes with birds, I love it. Every single line a character utters is something special to me. Nothing would make me see a remake.

I love 'The Birds', when I bought it a few years ago i guess I was in this phase of looking for symbolism in everything because I watched it thinking "ok, i BET its a shoe on the other foot metaphore and the birds are displaying humanistic traits and vice versa". Looking back i know that was kind of a stretch but if you watch the movie with that thought in mind there are some things that back it up, like when the lead is trapped in a phone booth and the birds poke at it its like a bird being in a cage and a person poking at it....ah the fun of interpertation.
About those remakes...apparently teen wolf is being remade with a female lead, I heard somthing about a remake of the day the earth stood still and for what its worth Wikipedia lists remakes of the following (featuring my own personal commentary in case anyone is interested):
- 1984
The version actually made in 1984 cannot be topped, i think its pointless to try.
- The Bad Seed (directed by Eli Roth)
This has potential provided: it isn't modernized, its done simply (it doesnt need a multi million budget, it shouldnt have one), the screenplay is reworked to avoid coming off as unintentional cheese.
- Creature From the Black Lagoon
I have major issues with CGI. This film would obviously utilize it for the title character and this could prove effective if done sparingly but the original had appeal for me beacuse you could tell the creature was a living physical entity so should that element be kept i'll enjoy it. Oh, and also this shouldnt be modernized either. Because I liked period suspense films and modern radar technology would ruin the mystery.
- Conan the Barbarian
can't comment, never seen the original.
- Evil Dead
same as above. but if its based on the musical then that may be intersting (havent seen that either, just speculating)
- I Married a Witch (directed by Danny Divito)
Ummmm.....havent seen the original. But its what inspired bewitched, it will inevitably be compared to bewitched espically with THAT current remake so i dont see this working out.
- Revenge of the Nerds
No. It was good for its time, leave it there.
- Sunset Boulevard
This is based off the musical which i've never seen, the original movie was really good but i'm not sure if the two are even comparable so no comment here.
- Swiss Family Robinson
Its been done. But once again i don't want it modernized.
- Westworld
THIS has potential to be modernized, i mean it takes place in the future anyways. I liked the original but I would have liked the tourism aspect upped a notch and...i just think this could be a good remake. not sure why. maybe just because robots are cool
so thats the list according to wikipedia, whose to say how accurate it is, I haven't found much or anything on some of those remakes elsewhere on the net but its certanly intersting to at least contemplate what the remakes would be like. We'll just have to wait and see...

I don't get it - all these classics being remade but still no mention of a CGI updated remake of EARTHQUAKE!!!!!!!
You could even work the Global Warming thang into it somehow.
I smell money waiting to be made.
Marjoe could reprise the Lorne Greene role.

They are not going to call it the Big Chill, it'll be an all black cast, and updated with an urban sensibility.
How is this even a remake? It sounds like a cpmpletely new movie that just fits in a similar genre.

Totally, tazber. THE BIG CHILL was about Boomers who grew up in the sixties bewildered by the inevitable loss of their once-precious ideals. How the hell is that going to be...? Oh, forget it!

With any luck whatsoever, this Big Chill will find its way to the trash heap, like the proposed remake of DECLINE AND FALL OF THE AMERICAN EMPIRE, a classic Canadian film that some nimrod in Hollywood wanted to remake and set in Connecticut... after, of course, taking out the gay guy who's always out cruising and eliminatng the pool sex and changing just about everything else that speaks to the film's core message about society's views about sex.

Ugh, remaking The Birds and attempting to explain their behavior is an awful idea. Way to zap the suspense, not to mention that it's a completely irrational thing (which is the point), so any explanation they attempt is going to be mind-numbingly stupid.
On the other hand, I actually found du Maurier's short story more frightening and compelling than the film.

While that sounds like the worst thing ever conceived since George W, we must not forget Creul Intentions which was a teen update of Dangerous Liasons. That one was trashy good fun.
