Update: Bill O'Reilly turns against Shawn Hornbeck

Posted: 1/16/07 at 5:40pmIt's always "blame the victim." He was 11 years old, for God's sake. I imagine Devlin told him numerous times "I got you once, I can get you again" or "I know where you live" or "If you tell anyone, I'll kill your family." And I'd be willing to bet that he was kept in submission through sexual assault as well. A terrified child isn't going to make a break for it after living through that kind of abuse. Period.

As this played out this afternoon and evening, the focus on the younger boy -- who endured but four days in comparison to four years -- puts the issue in perspective. The younger kid has been interviewed from Meredith on Today onward, and it's been made clear that he cannot discuss with the media any aspect of his brief stay with Devlin. Yes, I see that this is a big story, and whatever happened inside that apartment is news, but the invasive tactics with the younger child are already inappropriate. And not useful -- for those seeking to keep their own kids away from the Devlins, the actual kidnapping moment is never discussed. What do we learn aside from the need for "hugs" and a new backpack?
Before someone launches into a shameless media diatribe, let's note how often the families have already made themselves available to the glare of the public spotlight. Mostly the younger boy's. By the third press conference/interview, I was wondering when they'd just go home and stop parading the kid around without letting him say anything substantive. Yes, we now know that he "won't be let out of their sight." But if the media keep the story alive to satisfy curiosity (admittedly, my own, or I wouldn't have created this thread), the families need to carefully shield these kids.

How can anyone be a fan of this guy? Bill O'Reilly on why Shawn Hornbeck should have escaped.
...All right, you know, the Stockholm syndrome thing, I don't buy it. I've never bought it. I didn't think it happened in the Patty Hearst case. I don't think it happened here.- Bill O'Reilly

my coworkers were already attacking this kid today...ssyaing that he had to be "sick" to stay there, & that it was his parents fault for sheltering him so much that he didnt even realiz he's been kidnapped.
they mustve heard it somewhere because none of them have ever had an original thought, & they pride themselves in how well they can parrot what they've heard on the teevee or radio.

Thanks for the updates, folks. I just heard Joy Behar on THE VIEW report with disgust on O'Reilly's condemnation. Predictable. How we love to adore, prematurely sexualize (Jon Benet), and then demonize the behavior of our children in this society.
They are our children. Children. Any minor stolen and then placed under the constant surveillance of a psychopath with a gun and a computer stocked with kiddie porn does not need high-profile adult telling America "he doesn't buy it." Disgusting, and you would think beneath the "values" of Fox News.

Posted: 1/18/07 at 1:10pmI'm starting to believe that one quality that separates conservatives from others is the inability to put themselves in someone else's shoes. If they haven't experienced a situation, they just can't see how it might affect them. Maybe that's why those in the arts tend to be more liberal. It's very difficult to create a character, write a novel, or paint a portrait without this kind of imaginative ability.

Oprah's got him, but he ain't talking.
What is the point?
The kid is not saying anything.
What needs to be addressed is the method this guy used to lure these boys away.
Did he drug them? Throw them in the back of his truck?
That is what parents and children need to know. Not what happened once the boys were with him.

Firstly, what else would you expect from Billo?
Now, I for one am glad he isn't talking yet. Clearly, he isn't ready, as his stepfather has been saying since he was recovered. He shouldn't have to talk about this until he's damn good and ready.
