Venice has been flooded with larger than normal Aqua Alta
St Marks Square flooded with 5 feet of water.
The Italian government better do something about this quickly. I am glad we were not there when this happened . We were there 10 years ago when their was about 6 inches of water & not 5 feet.
wow, 5 feet is a bit extreme. I've been there when it was about a foot and that was pretty crazy.

I saw something years ago on the Discovery Channel about how Italy was working on the problem, something like underwater gates. I hope something can be done because I hear from everyone who's been there that it's a magical city.

I've been looking at the photos being sent in to BBC.
When I was in Venice it was oppressively hot that summer and the water smelled bad, no flooding though. I wasn't impressed with the city and quickly "fled" to the Marches.
Its MUCH better in the winter, without all of the tourists.
I was there for the month of january a few years ago and there was no one there.

it is heaven anytime!
Well yeah, i've been there in summer as well and loved it, but the smell and crowd can be a little overwhelming in the summer (then again, the same can be said of NYC, only the smell never really goes away.)
I've been twice, and it's one of my favorite cities. Truly unique.
I'm so sad to hear this. I'm going to Google around and see if I can find pictures.
EDIT: Found 'em. Wow ...
I always thought that was kind of the attraction of Venice, that it is a city with water all through it. I mean, isn't that what it is known for? Hmmmm.
the water generally stays in the canals, and when St Marks floods its not usually that high. this is a rarity.
Heartbreaking. You wouldn't know it from these pictures or the stories of smelly water in the summer, but it is one of the most beautiful and magical places on earth.
We were there last in the Autumn of '01. We stayed in a little palazetto across the Grand Canal from the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. The owners had fallen on hard times and were renting out rooms. They knew absolutely nothing about how to manage a bed and breakfast, but the views couldn't be beat.
We walked everywhere, up and down those little bridges over the smaller canals. Our favorite restaurant was a little place called Al Covo, near the Arsenale, run by a Venetian man and his wife, who is from Texas. She learned to cook all her husband's Nonna's recipes and they opened the restaurant, which quickly became popular with hip Venetians and American tourists.
But everything was wonderful in Venice. I wish them well.

Did you see any dwarf ladies with red hooded capes?
No, I am pretty sure Corine wasn't there then.

I was there about 20 years ago when there was a big storm and about 3 feet of water. they put up saw horses and walking planks and we had to manuever around each other. Most restaurants and stores were closed because they were under water and most of the tourist places were closed. My husband would not stay in Venice and made reservations out side ofthe city, I was so sad because the evening before the storm was so beautiful, I did not want to leave, and the next day was worthless, we rode the ferries all day and went to one of the small islands that was higher. We couldn't go to the cemetary because that was under water.
There are 408 bridges in Venice, many of them very grand and very famous.
But it's those little bridges you have to walk over to get from one place to another that I remember best.
You just keep on going up and down, like the entire city is one big Stairmaster.
OMG I have SOOOOOOOOO Many photos of Venice from my trips, i need to dig those up. I took like 300 photos in 3 weeks when i went to Venice for STudy Abroad.
Maybe if we post beautiful photos, the waters will recede.
I went in October and found that a perfect time. Weather was still good ,no bad squalls temp cool enough that the canals didn't waft and less crowds. EXcept Nov 1- a big Saints Day and a stat holiday in Italy so all(it seemed) the Italians use it to take a weekend break in Venice.
Tangental- Wonder if they ever fixed the big atological clock in St Marks? Seems like it's mean under repair for 20 yrs.

This isn't actually Venice, it's Burano, one of the islands in the Laguna a little north east of Venice.
ETA
I'll resize it as it was F****** hUGE.
ETA again, there, smaller less page ruining.

Venice probably the most beautiful place I've ever been. I adored it. These are from my trip.
Sorry to see it under so much water now.

Honey, the whole place is sinking.
I found that out when I went a few years back. It'll be underwater in about 100 years.
